De Cubaanse pianist Omar Sosa is niet te vangen in één stijl. Dat maakt hem ook zo bijzonder: ‘waar komt hij nu weer mee?’ Op zijn nieuwe CD ‘Transparant Water’ wordt hij bijgestaan door kora-speler (Afrikaanse harp) Seckou Keita en een zestal gastmusici in een meditatief Afrikaans/Orientaals muzikaal scala met schitterend tokkelend samenspel tussen kora en piano.

Omar Sosa is een onmiskenbaar ritmisch pianist die zich beweegt op het snijvlak van Afro-Cubaanse en Latijns-Amerikaanse muziek. Hij studeerde jazz aan het Conservatorium in Havana. Als hij zich in 1995 in San Francisco vestigt raakt hij geïnteresseerd in latin-jazz en werkt een tijdje met de giga-band Tower of Power. Uiteindelijk vestigt hij zich in Barcelona in 1999. Omar Sosa neemt zo’n 27 albums op waarvan ‘Ballads’ (2005), zijn enerverende ‘Senses‘ uit 2014 en ‘Eggūn’ (eerbetoon aan Miles Davis) uitschieters zijn.

‘Transparant Water‘ is een twinkelend album waar je in elk nummer water hoort stromen, kabbelen, sijpelen of vloeien. In een maakbaar passe partout kleurt Sosa met zijn klavier de schittering van het water, samen met de kora van Seckou Keita. Maar dat is nog niet alles want dit duo wordt bijgestaan door musici op de sheng (Chinees mondorgel en de voorloper van de accordeon), de Japanse koto en de geojungo (Koreaanse zither). Deze Aziatische instrumenten geven de muziek niet alleen een extra fraaie klankkleur maar laten het water ook dansen in allerlei tinten zoals je dat maar zelden tegenkomt. De composities zijn traag, glooiend, nadenkend en geven rust aan het spectrum, op ‘Fatiliku’ en ‘Moro Yeye‘ na: ritmisch Afrikaanse stukken en een van de weinige gezongen composities. ‘Transparant Water’ staat vol geïmproviseerde muziek waarin Sosa en Keita elkaar feilloos aanvoelen en aanvullen.  Schitterende muziek die je terug meeneemt naar het water waar uiteindelijk al het leven uit is ontstaan. Een prachtige metafoor voor deze tijdloze muziek!

The Cuban pianist Omar Sosa is not catchable in one style. That makes him so special: ‘What will be his next project?‘ On this new CD ‘Transparent Water‘ he is assisted by kora player (African harp) Seckou Keita and six guest musicians in a meditative African/ Oriental musical range. A great chilling match between kora and piano.

Omar Sosa is an undeniable rhythmic pianist who creates an Afro-Cuban and Latin American style. He studied jazz at the Conservatory in Havana. In 1995 he went to San Francisco and got interested in Latin jazz and worked with the great band Tower of Power for a while. Eventually, he settled down in Barcelona in 1999. Omar Sosa recorded about 27 albums of which ‘Ballads‘ (2005), his enchanting ‘Senses‘ from 2014 and ‘Eggūn‘ (tribute to Miles Davis) are special ones.

‘Transparent Water’ is a twinkling album. In each song you hear flowing, chill or sip water. With his piano Sosa colors a sparkling ‘sound’ of water along with the kora of Seckou Keita. But that’s not all, because this duo is assisted by musicians on the sheng (Chinese mouth organ and the forerunner of the accordion), the Japanese koto and the geojungo (Korean zither). These Asian instruments not only give the music an extraordinary sound but also makes the water to dance in all sorts of tones, as you rarely encounter. The compositions are slow, thoughtful and give a kind of peace to the spectrum; except ‘Fatiliku’ and ‘Moro Yeye‘: these songs are rhythmic African pieces and one of the few sung ones. ‘Transparent Water’ is full of improvised music in which Sosa and Keita lovely complement each other. Gorgeous music that takes you back to the water, where eventually all life has come from. A beautiful metaphor for this timeless music!
