Al jaren schrijft cellist Nicola Segatta muziek voor theater en al jaren hoort hij van acteurs dat zijn thema’s oorwormen zijn die in je hoofd blijven hangen. Dit soort melodieën arrangeerde Segatta en voorzag ze van teksten van William Shakespeare. Het resultaat is een aaneenschakeling van beeldende representatieve muziek.

In 2010 wordt Nicola Segatta gevraagd twee teksten uit ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ van William Shakespeare op muziek te zetten voor een festival in Turijn. Hij componeert muziek die hij uitvoert met zijn Piccola Orchestra Lumière, het Trio Broz, de cellisten Monika Leskovar en Giovanni Sollima en zangeres Adele Pardi. Dit project werd zo’n groot succes, dat hij meer werk ging componeren en een CD niet kon uitblijven. Leuk detail: de muziek werd vanwege het vermijden van straatgeluiden midden in de nacht in de Philharmonic Hall in Trento opgenomen. Uiteindelijk duurt het nog drie jaar voordat Segatta een CD-label bereid vindt om zijn muziek ook werkelijk uit te brengen. Niet zo vreemd, want in deze hokjes-maatschappij is ‘Shakespeare for Dreamers’ een klassiek album met teveel pop-invloeden en een pop-album met teveel klassieke invloeden….en daardoor niet stijlgebonden. Maar dat is nou juist wat deze muziek zo bijzonder maakt!!

Nicola Segatta is een klank-kunstenaar die met enkele instrumenten een breed, soms bijna orkestraal imago weet te creëren. Combinaties van cello, hoorn, klavecimbel, piano, klarinet, fluit en heldere vocalen laat hij muziek schijnen op teksten van William Shakespeare, eind 16de eeuw. Thema’s verlopen toch nét even anders dan je verwacht en klinken daardoor heerlijk vertrouwd. Zijn muziek doet denken aan werk van Michael Nymann, Claudio Monteverdi, Claude Gervaise, Michael Praetorius en Francis Poulenc, met een vette knipoog naar popmuziek en zelfs musical. Een verrassende combinatie met verrassende wendingen en theatrale overgangen. De composities hebben een perfect organisch verloop waardoor je je zo nu en dan afvraagt of je deze muziek als eens eerder hebt gehoord. Een manier van componeren die Nicola Segatta voortreffelijk beheerst en waarmee hij een breed publiek zal bereiken. Dat is nu nog niet het geval maar dat is gewoon een kwestie van tijd.

For years, cellist Nicola Segatta has written music for theater and for years actors told him that his themes remain in their mind, all day. This kind of melodies Segatta arranged for his little orchestra and provided them with William Shakespeare’s lyrics. The result is a combination of lovely representative music.

In 2010, Nicola Segatta was asked to put two lyrics from William Shakespeare’s ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream‘ to music for a festival in Turin. Segatta composed great music which he performs with his Piccola Orchestra Lumière, Trio Broz, the cellist Monika Leskovar and Giovanni Sollima and the lovely singer Adele Pardi. This project was such a great success, that he composed some more compositions and for sure a CD had to be released. Nice detail: the music on ‘Shakespeare for Dreamers’ was recorded in the Philharmonic Hall in Trento in the middle of the night due to the avoidance of street noise. Ultimately, it took another three years before a record label was willing to release his music. Not so strange, because this wonderful album is a classic one with too many pop influences and a pop album with too many classic influences and therefore not style bound. But that’s exactly what makes this music so special!

Nicola Segatta is a fine artist who creates lovely colors in music. With only a few instruments he knows how to create a orchestral atmosphere. Combinations of cello, horn, harpsichord, piano, clarinet, flute and clear vocals he shines a complete new image on the lyrics written by William Shakespeare, late 16th century. The melodies are a little different from what you expect but still sound very familiar. His music reminds of works by Michael Nymann, Claudio Monteverdi, Claude Gervaise, Michael Praetorius and Francis Poulenc, with a slice of pop music and even musical. A surprising combination with surprising twists and theatrical transitions. The compositions have a perfect organic move, which makes you wonder whether or not you’ve heard this music once before. This makes Nicola Segatta’s music exquisitely and in this way he will reach a wide audience. It’s only just a matter of time. ‘Shakespeare for Dreamers’ could easily become thé album of the year 2017!
