‘Stories 1986 – 2016’ is een prachtige compilatie-CD van de Italiaanse diatonische accordeonist Ambrogio Sparagna, die te horen is als solist maar ook met zijn diverse orkesten en projecten. Een schitterend overzicht van een veelzijdige muzikant, componist, arrangeur en zanger.

Ambrogio Sparagna werd geboren in Maranola, een plaats in het noorden van Italie, in de buurt van Genua. Hij studeerde etnomusicologie aan de Universiteit van Rome en is altijd op zoek naar de Italiaanse populaire muziek. In 1984 richt hij zijn Bosio Big Band waarin de organetto (de diatonische accordeon) centraal staat. Dit instrument staat over het algemeen centraal in zijn werk dat hij speelt met verschillende groepen zoals het Orchestra of Giofa, Orchestra of La via del Romei, Orchestra Sparagnina, Orchestra Popolare Italiana en zijn Orchestra Popolare La Notta della Taranta dat de tarantella speelt. Een snelle dans uit het zuiden van Italie en uitgebreid aan bod komt tijdens het jaarlijks terugkerend tarantella-festival in Melpignano (Puglia).

De muziek van Ambrogio Sparagna is enerzijds melodisch zoals het ‘Vorrei ballare’ (Bosio Big Band) of ‘Kendime’ dat gezongen wordt in het Arebesh, een Italiaans/Albanese taal. Ook het lied ‘Ilemo’ springt eruit waar het Griko (een archaïsch Griekse taal) zorgt voor een verrassende signatuur. Anderzijds is zijn muziek energiek, zoals ‘Disperato erotico stomp’. Een pizzica (tarantella) die live werd opgenomen tijdens het Tarantella Festival in Zuid-Italie waar Sparagna in 2006 het album ‘La Notte della Taranta’ opnam.

Maar het beste werk van Ambrogio Sparagna is toch wel zijn composities waar de organetto solistisch wordt gebruikt, waar kleine thema’s over-en-over worden herhaald en in draagkracht winnen. Waar kleine thema’s grote muziekstukken worden door de repeterende werking; zoals in het religieuze ‘Viene Suonno da lu cielo‘ of ‘La rondine aurunca’, over een zwaluw die na de zomer niet meer terugkeert. Maar voor diegene die meer variatie wil, biedt deze uitgebreide compilatie ‘Stories 1986 – 2016‘ een veelzijdige accordeonist. Koorwerk, zowel religieus als werelds, prachtige samenwerkingen met o.a. lyrische klarinettist Gabriele Mirabassi, de fantastische pianiste Rita Marcotulli en de voortreffelijke zangeressen Eleonora Bordona en Lucilla Galeazzi. Het gebruik van piano, harp, slagwerk, cello, zampogna (soort doedelzak) en gitaar in een scala aan live- en studio-opnames geeft je een mooi overzicht van zijn werk waar Sparagana de katalysator is van tijdloze Italiaanse muziek.

‘Stories 1986 – 2016’ is a wonderful compilation CD of the Italian diatonic accordionist Ambrogio Sparagna, who is to be heard as a soloist but also with his orchestras and projects. A magnificent overview of a versatile musician, composer, arranger and singer.

Ambrogio Sparagna was born in Maranola, a city in northern Italy, near Genoa. He studied ethnomusicology at the University of Rome and is always in search for Italian popular music. In 1984 he founded his Bosio Big Band in which the organetto (the diatonic accordion) is the central instrument. Sparagna played in different bands, like the Orchestra of Giofa, Orchestra of La via del Romei, Orchestra Sparagnina, Orchestra Popolare Italiana and his Orchestra Popolare La Notta della Taranta that plays the tarantella. A fast dance from southern Italy and extensively during the Tarantella festival in Melpignano (Puglia).

On one hand the music of Ambrogio Sparagna is melodic, like ‘Vorrei ballare‘ (Bosio Big Band) or ‘Kendime‘ sung in the Arebesh, an Italian/Albanian language. The song ‘Ilemo‘ is very beautiful in which we hear Griko; an archaic Greek language. This language creates a surprising signature. On the other hand his music is energetic like ‘Disperato erotico blunt‘. A pizzica (tarantella) that was recorded live during the Tarantella Festival in southern Italy where Sparagna recorded the album ‘La Notte della Taranta‘ in 2006.

But Ambrogio Sparagna’s most exciting work are his compositions where the organetto is soloistically used, where short themes are repeated over and over again and put into a special spectrum. Where short themes become great compositions by the repetitive effect; to be found in the religious ‘Viene Suonno da Lu Cielo’ or ‘La Rondine Aurunca‘, about a swallow that is no longer returning after summer. But for those who want more variety, this extensive compilation ‘Stories 1986 – 2016′ offers a versatile accordionist. Choir pieces, both religious and profane, wonderful collaborations, including the lyrical clarinetist Gabriele Mirabassi, the amazing pianist Rita Marcotulli and the excellent singers Eleonora Bordona and Lucilla Galeazzi. The use of piano, harp, percussion, cello, zampogna (kind of bagpipe) and guitar in a variety of live and studio recordings gives you a nice overview of his work where Sparagana is the engine of timeless Italian music.
