Jochen Feucht is sopraansaxofonist en fluitist die met zijn trio de transparante CD ‘Light Play‘ aflevert. Hij wordt bijgestaan door vibrafonist Dizzy Krisch en gitarist Günter Weis met wie hij een fraai licht laat schijnen op nieuwe muzikale prisma’s, gelardeerd met rijke lichtinval in doorgewinterde melodische thematiek met strakke solo’s.

Zoals het licht speelt met schaduw, zo speelt het Jochen Feucht Trio met klank. De belichting is cruciaal voor de schaduw achter een onderwerp, dat geldt ook voor de muzikale benadering van dit sax/vibrafoon/gitaar-trio dat vol suggestie met slechts drie instrumenten meer laat horen dan er werkelijk klinkt. Kleine subtiele verschillen tussen de nummers zorgen voor een coherent geheel, waarbij gitaar en vibrafoon de verbindende instrumenten zijn. De ostinate percussie- en melodielijnen, het gebruik van pentatoniek, cross-rhythms, fraaie (soms unisono) thema’s en doortastende solo’s geven ‘Light Play’ lucht en ruimte. Toch is het ook een afwisselend album waar gastmuzikant Suman Sarkar met de tabla in enkele nummers een heel ander geluid laat horen. Alhoewel het Jochen Feucht Trio doortastende muziek speelt, is deze alles behalve gemakkelijk. Over het algemeen wel toegankelijk voor de wat beter georiënteerde jazz/improvisatieliefhebber die een sterke voorkeur heeft voor melancholie. Deze weemoed ligt verscholen in melodie en arrangement waarbij de 12-snarige gitaar, vibrafoon en sax/fluit elkaar niet alleen liefdevol omarmen, maar elkaar ook complementair ondersteunen. Op deze manier zijn deze instrumenten elkaars equivalent waardoor het trio doortastend en zelfverzekerd overkomt!

Jochen Feucht is a soprano saxophone player and flutist who recorded with his trio the transparent CD ‘Light Play‘. He is assisted by vibraphonist Dizzy Krisch and guitarist Günter Weis, who shine a beautiful light on new musical prisms. They put the music into the perfect light in melodic themes and tight solos.

As the light plays with shadow, the Jochen Feucht Trio plays with sound. The light is crucial to the shadow behind a subject, which also applies to the musical approach of this sax / vibraphone / guitar trio. Their sounds is full of suggestions. With only three instruments they create a full band. Small subtle differences between the compositions provide coherent parts, with guitar and vibraphone being the connecting instruments. The ostinate percussion and melody lines, the use of pentatonics, cross-rhythms, beautiful (sometimes unisono) themes and solo solos give ‘Light Play‘ air and space. Nevertheless, it is also an alternate album where guest musician Suman Sarkar put a different sound in some songs with the tabla. Although the Jochen Feucht Trio plays intriguing music, it’s no easy-listening. In general, it’s great and inspriring music for the better-oriented jazz and improvisation listener who has a strong preference for melancholy, hidden in melody and arrangement. The 12-string guitar, vibraphone and sax / flute are put well together in a lovely complement way, which makes the Jochen Feucht Trio is passionate and confident band!
