EVA is een kwartet rond de Nederlandse zangeres Hiske Oosterwijk die met haar album ‘Embrasser Vivre aimer’ een deuk slaat in het Franse (chanson) repertoire. Ze wordt bijgestaan door de Letse pianist Toms Mikals, de Turkse bassist Esat Ekingioglu en de Amerikaanse drummer Owen hart Jr.

De muziek van EVA beweegt rond het Frans chanson. Frankrijk is al jaren het land waar het lied, het chanson, een sterk onderdeel uitmaakt van de muzikale geschiedenis van het land. In de Middeleeuwen waren het de troubadours en trouvères (zangers en dichters) die (vooral) in Occitanië (Zuid-Frankrijk) actief waren, rondtrokken en (liefdes)liederen zongen. Het kwartet EVA creëert zijn eigen stijl rond deze eeuwenoude muziek en infiltreert deze met (Franse) popmuziek, jazz en funk invloeden. Maar het is toch vooral zangeres Hiske Oosterwijk die het boegbeeld is van dit kwartet. Geboren in Friesland studeert ze aan het Prins Claus Conservatorium in Groningen waar ze in 2014 afstudeert. Ze heeft een warme stem die schittert op ‘Embrasser Vivre aimer’, de ietwat korte debuut-CD waarop Oosterwijk op zoek gaat naar haar identiteit, haar muzikale droom, te horen in ‘Mon Rêve‘ of de eenzaamheid van het muzikantenbestaan in ‘Tu n’es pas la’, een compositie met een vette knipoog naar het werk van Philip Glass. Zij schreef de meeste stukken en zingt ze allemaal in het Frans. Fraai is het openingslied ‘Chanson de l’amour‘ dat met lange vocale uithalen in het intro de aandacht trekt en met gebruik van bijzondere akkoord-wisselingen een link legt tussen het Franse lied uit de jaren-50 en de hedendaagse versie. Haar band bestaat uit vakbekwame musici die met smaak en overtuiging strakke arrangementen spelen, met opvallend klavierwerk van Toms Mikalis en stevig compacte drumpartijen van Owen hart Jr. Energiek is de uitvoering van ‘Vesoul’, een klassieker van Jacques Brel, in een versie waarop deze Waalse zanger trots zou zijn geweest en waarmee ‘Embrasser Vivre aimer‘ prachtig wordt afgesloten.

EVA is the quartet of the Dutch singer Hiske Oosterwijk. Her album ‘Embrasser Vivre aimer’ is a wonderful record with French (chanson) repertoire. She is assisted by the Latvian pianist Tom Mikals, bassist Esat Ekingioglu from Turkey and the American drummer Owen heart Jr.

EVA’s music is about the French chanson. France has always been a country of the ‘song’, the chanson, with a strong history which is the musical soul of the country. In the Middle Ages troubadours and trouvères (singers and poets) travelled (mostly) in Occitania (southern France) singing (love) songs. The quartet EVA creates their own style of this ancient music and added (French) pop music, jazz and funk. But above all, singer Hiske Oosterwijk is the figurehead of this quartet. Born in Friesland (a Northern part of the Netherlands) she studies at the Prince Claus Conservatoire at Groningen where she graduates in 2014. She has a warm voice that shines on ‘Embrasser Vivre aimer’, the somewhat short début CD on which Oosterwijk searches for her identity, her musical dream, like in the song ‘Mon Rêve‘ or the solitude of a musician in ‘Tu n ‘es pas la’, a composition with an eye wink to the work of Philip Glass. She wrote most of the pieces all sung in French. Beautiful is the opening song ‘Chanson de l’amour’ which attracts the attention with long vocals in the intro and using special chord changes establishing a link between the French song from the 50’s and today’s version. Her band consists of skilled musicians playing tight arrangements, with striking piano work of Toms Mikalis and the compact drums of Owen heart Jr. Energetic is ‘Vesoul‘, a classic song of Jacques Brel, a version of which this Belgian singer would be proud of and which is a great piece to close ‘Embrasser Vivre aimer‘!
