‘As it Was’ is de titel van de compilatie-uitgave van vier CD’s die drummer Peter Erskine opnam met bassist Palle Danielsson en pianist John Taylor tussen 1992 en 1999 voor het record label ECM. Drie topmusici die veel werk spelen van Taylor, maar ook stukken van Vince Mendoza, Kenny Wheeler Danielsson, Erskine en Cole Porter.

Drie jazzmusici, de Amerikaan Erskine, Danielsson uit Zweden en de Brit Taylor gaan op vier albums een muzikale conversatie aan waarbij ze goed naar elkaar luisteren, elkaar ruimschoots aan het woord laten en een muzikale cohesie creëren waarbij improvisatie heel gemakkelijk zijn sporen verdient. Prachtig en innemend is bijvoorbeeld het openingsstuk ‘New Old Age’ van John Taylor van de eerste CD ‘You Never Know‘. Een Richard Beirach achtige compositie (Elm) die met piano-solo begint en waar drums en bas zich heel geleidelijk voegen in de dramatiek van deze schijnbaar eindeloze melodie. Er ontstaat een coherent geheel dat garant staat voor de muziek die volgt op de nog drie andere CD’s ‘Time Being‘ (’94), ‘As it is‘ (’96) en ‘Juni‘ uit 1999. Peter Erskine is een gevarieerd drummer die niet alleen zorgt voor een duidelijke ritmiek maar regelmatig ritmisch boven de muziek lijkt te zweven met een variatie op een denkbaar gespeelde drumpartij. Bassist Palle Danielsson laat zijn trefzekere en volle toon regelmatig ronken en trillen en vult de thematiek prachtig aan met solistische frasen. Het touché en de frasering van pianist John Taylor sluiten aan bij het spel van Keith Jarrett. Ook Taylor (1942-2015) laat de melodie prevaleren boven virtuositeit en creëert vaak een sferisch geheel zoals in ‘Page 172‘: een stuk vol arpeggio’s met een ritmische knipoog naar het impressionisme. Maar ook de psalm gelardeerde balladen, de folk, de ritmische stukken (met rock en gospel) wisselen elkaar af en vormen een smaakvol defilé van interessante stukken die de moeite waard zijn om vaker te beluisteren. Wie destijds deze vier CD’s heeft gemist, krijgt nu een herkansing; mooi in één doosje met boekje!

‘As it Was’ is the title of the compilation release of four CD’s that drummer Peter Erskine recorded with bassist Palle Danielsson and pianist John Taylor between 1992 and 1999 for the ECM record label (nowadays: ECM ‘Old and New Masters Series‘). Three musicians who play a lot of compositions by Taylor, but also pieces of Erskine, Danielsson, Vince Mendoza, Kenny Wheeler and Cole Porter.

Three jazz musicians, the American Erskine, Danielsson from Sweden and Briton Taylor have a wonderful musical conversation on four albums in which they carefully listen to each other and create a musical cohesion. Stunning and engaging is the opening piece ‘New Old Age‘ by John Taylor of the first CD ‘You Never Know‘. A composition that sounds like Richard Beirach’s ‘Elm‘. The music starts with piano solo and where drums and double bass are added, the drama gradually fits into this wonderful endless melody. This creates coherent music which is the basic format for the music on the following three other CD’s ‘Time Being‘ (’94), ‘As it is’ (’96) and ‘June’ released in 1999. Peter Erskine is a varied drummer which not only guarantees a clear rhythm but regularly seems to float ‘above’ the music with a lovely variation of imaginable played drum parts. Bassist Palle Danielsson creates a full and warm tone complements easily the themes with solo phrases. Pianist John Taylor is a major player who sounds like Keith Jarrett. Also Taylor (1942-2015) makes the melody sound fresh and plays virtuoso. He often creates an entirely spherical atmosphere like in ‘Page 172‘: a piece full of arpeggios with a (rhythmic) link to Impressionism. But also the psalm laced ballads, folk, rhythmic pieces (with rock and gospel) alternates a tasteful parade of interesting pieces that are worth listen more than once.
