Joris Posthumus is een begenadigd post-bebop altsaxofonist die met zijn tweede album ‘Tokyo’s Bad Boys‘ een stevige deuk slaat in de Nederlandse jazz-scene. Het album werd opgenomen in Japan met Japanse musici die hij ontmoette tijdens een tour in 2011. Deze nieuwe CD bevat negen stukken, geïnspireerd op die tour door Japan.

Het ontstaan van het nieuwe album ‘Tokyo’s Bad Boys’ begint in 2011 als Joris Posthumus door China tourt met de Nederlandse groep State of Monc. Tijdens die tournee ontmoet hij altsaxofonist Yuichiro Tokuda met wie hij in 2014 concerten geeft in Japan en later in kleine clubs in Nederland en België. In die tijd ontwikkelt hij de muziek voor deze nieuwe CD die hij in 2015 opneemt in Japan met Japanse musici. Het resultaat is dynamische bebop met een solide ritme-sectie (bas en drums), piano en Joris Posthumus op altsax, aangevuld met twee gastmusici; tenorsaxspeler Yukui Nakae en natuurlijk Yuichiro Tokuda op altsax. Korte thema’s vormen de aftrap voor energieke solo’s die zeer strak en hecht worden ondersteund door deze Japanse muzikanten. De doortastende en herkenbare klank van Posthumus snijdt als een mes door de muziek en voegt een pittige en energieke lading toe. Net zoals het markante en ritmische spel van pianist Shunichi Yanagi die met virtuoze solo’s en het laag neerleggen van brede klanken en blokakkoorden (zoals in titelstuk ‘Tokyo’s Bad Boys’) lijkt op klavierleeuw McCoy Tyner. De meeste stukken zijn up-tempo op enkele ballads na zoals ‘Mr. Amano’ dat met zijn lyrische thematiek breed wordt ondersteund door piano en drums of ‘Maze Runner’ waar alle drie de saxen een prachtige meerstemmigheid spelen. Deze ‘Tokyo’s Bad Boys’ zijn met Joris Posthumus de ‘geweldige good guys’ die met deze tweede CD ongetwijfeld hoge ogen gaan gooien!

Joris Posthumus is a gifted post-bebop alto saxophonist from the Netherlands, who just released his great second album ‘Tokyo’s Bad Boys‘. The album was recorded in Japan with Japanese musicians who he met during a tour in 2011. Nine compositions inspired by his tour you’ll find on this new record.

In 2011 Joris Posthumus toured through China with the Dutch group State of Monc. During this tour he met the alto saxophonist Yuichiro Tokuda with whom he performs in Japan in 2014 and later in small clubs in the Netherlands and Belgium. During that time he developed the music for this new CD ‘Tokyo’s Bad Boys’, which he recorded in Japan with Japanese musicians in 2015. The result is dynamic bebop record with a solid rhythm section (bass and drums), piano and Joris Posthumus on alto saxophone, plus two guest musicians; tenor sax player Yukui Nakae and Yuichiro Tokuda (alto sax) off course. Short themes are the beginning for energetic solos very tight and close accompanied by these fine Japanese musicians. The recognizable sound of Posthumus cuts through the music like a knife and adds a spicy and energetic feeling. Pianist Yanagi Shunichi is also a wonderful musician. He plays virtuoso solos and creates a broad piano sound and block chords (as in the title song ‘Tokyo’s Bad Boys‘) regarding to McCoy Tyner. Most of the pieces are upbeat with a few ballads added, like ‘Mr. Amano‘. A lyrical composition with tight piano and drums, or ‘Maze Runner’ where all three saxophones play a beautiful polyphony. The ‘Tokyo’s Bad Boys’, together with Joris Posthumus, are the ‘great good guys‘ who will undoubtedly end up high in the jazz charts!
