De Nederlandse gitarist Reinier Baas betreedt met zijn nieuwe album ‘Reinier Baas vs. Princess Discombobulatrix – A Mostly Instrumental Opera‘ een nieuw elan in de programmatisch geïmproviseerde muziek. In een grillige vorm gegoten en met een goede dosis zelfspot creëert hij een voortreffelijk Gesamtkunstwerk.

‘‘Reinier Baas vs. Princess Discombobulatrix’ is een overwegend instrumentale opera in drie bedrijven over prinses Discombobulatrix; een stevig rokende, duivelse figuur (met jojo) die er voor zorgt dat iedereen op een afschuwelijke manier aan zijn einde komt. Reinier Baas schreef alle stukken voor deze doorwrochte opera, waar gecomponeerde en geïmproviseerde gedeelten elkaar doorkruisen, overlappen en aanvullen. In een synopsis waar overwegend blaasinstrumenten (basklarinet en sax) de overhand hebben, wordt de muziek aangevuld met bas, drums en natuurlijk het ferme en trefzekere gitaarspel van de componist, herkenbaar door zijn vele glissandi en fijne, maar spaarzame effecten. Op drie stukken horen we hem ook op het klavier zoals op de ‘hidden track‘ en in ‘Waltz of the Enormous Wizard Zender‘, gevolgd door de vocale opkomst van prinses Discombobulatrix. Een schitterende Franse monoloog die kort een vergelijking oproept met de muziek van Francis Poulenc, gezongen  door Nora Fisher. Naast zijn vaste band spelen er acht gastmusici mee op blazers, contrabas en cello. Wars van stijlen put Reinier Baas uit de neo romantiek, impressionisme en hebben zijn composities inventieve raakvlakken met de muziek van Kurt Weill. Dat maakt het album ‘Reinier Baas vs. Princess Discombobulatrix’ origineel en gedurfd en daarmee een aanrader voor de avontuurlijke luisteraar!

With his new album ‘Reinier Baas vs. Princess Discombobulatrix – A Mostly Instrumental Opera‘ the Dutch guitarist Reinier Baas enters the programmatic improvised music. In a lovely musical landscape and with a good dose of self-mockery, he creates an excellent Gesamtkunstwerk.

‘Reinier Baas vs. Princess Discombobulatrix’ is a predominantly instrumental opera in three acts about the fictive princess Discombobulatrix; a smoking, diabolical figure (with yo-yo), who ensures that everyone comes to an end in a horrible way. Reinier Baas wrote all the pieces for this elaborate opera, where composed and improvised parts intersect, overlap and complement. In a synopsis where mostly wind instruments (clarinet and sax) prevail, the music is complemented by bass, drums and of course the firm and accurate guitar of the composer, recognizable by its many glissandi and fine but sparse effects. On three pieces he also plays the piano, as on the ‘hidden track’ and ‘Waltz of the Enormous Wizard Zende‘, followed by the vocal appearance of princess Discombobulatrix. A gorgeous French monologue sung by Nora Fisher which reminds of the music of Francis Poulenc. Besides his regular band, there are eight guest musicians on this record who play horns, double bass and cello. The music of Reinier Baas sounds like the neo romanticism, impressionism and his inventive reinterpretation of the music style of Kurt Weill. That makes ‘Reinier Baas vs. Princess Discombobulatrix‘ an original and daring record and therefore a ‘must have’ for the adventurous listener!
