De Finse jazzpianist Iiro Rantala startte eind 80-er jaren zijn legendarische Trio Töykeät. Een acrobatisch jazz-trio waar alle kanten van de jazz & geïmproviseerde muziek werden belicht. Op zijn laatste CD ‘How long is now?’ horen we hem op een fraai gebalanceerd album. Deze keer met de Zweedse bassist Lars Danielsson en de Amerikaanse drummer Peter Erskine.

Pianist Iiro Rantala heeft zo langzamerhand een eigen stijl gecreëerd waarbij hij goed in het gehoor liggende thema’s, woordloze liedjes giet in eigentijdse ritmes en voorziet van spannende arrangementen en solo’s. Een ontwikkeling die ontstaan is in de jaren ’80 en inmiddels een stijl op zich is geworden. Of zoals Iiro Rantala het zelf verwoordt: ‘…het spelen van eenvoudige, goed in het gehoor liggende melodieën die gemakkelijk kunnen worden onthouden‘. Precies! En hij speelt ze voortreffelijk met fraaie fraseringen en uitgekiende dynamiek. Hij schreef de helft van de stukken op de CD ‘How long is now?’, twee stukken zijn van Danielsson en één werk is geschreven door Peter Erskine. Het ‘Kyrie’ is een bewerking van een koraal uit de Miss in B-mineur van J.S. Bach dat refereert aan de acht jarige Rantala zingend in een jongenskoor. Prachtig is ook de latin-feel in het openingswerk ‘Voyage’ (van Kenny Barron) met strakke duool pianopartij in de bassolo. We horen een gospel-touch in ‘Each Breath‘ (van Peter Erskine) met een vette knipoog naar Keith Jarrett. Schitterend is het immens mooie thema ‘Taksim By Night‘ van Lars Daniesson met in het intro de riq, een kleine Arabische tamboerijn. Het titelstuk ‘How long is now?’ is een sierlijke compositie, een langzame mineur-wals met een bassolo en mooie thema-variatie op piano. Rantala, Danielsson en Erskine zijn drie doorgewinterde music die elkaar fantastisch aanvullen. Ze spelen geconcentreerd, met aandacht en ontspannen: een wijze van musiceren die dit album tijdloos maakt en daarmee een echte aanrader.

Iiro Rantala is een relatief onbekende jazzpianist in Nederland. Hij werd geboren in 1970 in Helsinki en studeerde aan de Sibelius Academie en de jazzafdeling van de Manhattan School of Music in New York. Hij is een bevlogen toegankelijke pianist die met zijn Trio Töykeät op humoristische en acrobatische wijze de geïmproviseerde muziek naar zijn hand zette en een frisse kijk gaf op de hedendaagse jazz. Inmiddels verschenen er vijf CD’s op het Duitse label ACT waarmee hij aansluit bij pianisten als Esbjörn Svensson en Martin Tingvall.

In the late 80’s the Finnish jazz pianist Iiro Rantala started his legendary Trio Töykeät. An energetic and acrobatic jazz trio with fine improvised music. On his new beautiful balanced album ‘How long is now?‘ he plays with the Swedish bassist Lars Danielsson and the American drummer Peter Erskine.

Pianist Iiro Rantala has gradually created his own style. Playing catchy themes, wordless songs he puts into contemporary rhythms, creating exciting arrangements and solos. A development that emerged in the 80s and has become a style in itself. Or as Iiro Rantala puts it: ‘… playing simple, good catchy melodies that can be easily remembered‘. Exactly! And he plays them exquisite with beautiful phrasing and sophisticated dynamics. He wrote seven of the thirteen pieces on the CD ‘How long is now?‘ Two pieces were written by Lars Danielsson and one work was composed by Peter Erskine. The ‘Kyrie‘ is an adaptation of a coral from the Miss in B minor by J.S. Bach that refers to the eight-year Rantala singing in a boys choir. Magnificent is the latin feel in the opening work ‘Voyage‘ (by Kenny Barron) with tight duool piano part in the bass solo. There’s a gospel-touch in ‘Each Breath‘ (by Peter Erskine) with a touch of pianist Keith Jarrett. Superb is the beautiful theme ‘Taksim By Night‘ written by Lars Daniesson with the riq, a small Arabic tambourine, in the intro. In addition, the title song ‘How long is now?’ is a graceful composition, a slow minor-waltz with a nice bass solo and themevariations on piano. Rantala, Danielsson and Erskine are three fantastic musicians that complement one another. Their music is concentrated, played with attention and relaxed: a way of making music that makes this album timeless and therefore highly recommended.

Iiro Rantala is a relatively unknown jazz pianist in the Netherlands. He was born in 1970 in Helsinki and studied at the Sibelius Academy and the jazz department of the Manhattan School of Music in New York. He is a passionate accessible pianist who played with his Trio Töykeät humorous and acrobatic improvised music. Giving a new touch to the contemporary jazz. Five CDs were released on the German label ACT on which he’s comparable with Esbjörn Svensson and Martin Tingvall.
