Drummer en percussionist Gigi Biolcati draait al heel wat jaren mee in de Italiaanse folk-scene, waar we hem regelmatig tegenkwamen op CD’s van meesteraccordeonist Ricardo Tesi. Nu heeft hij zijn debuut soloalbum ‘Da Spunda‘ uitgebracht waarop hij alle instrumenten zelf bespeelt, zingt en de meeste stukken componeerde.

Op zijn solo-CD ‘Da Spunda’ (‘De Andere Kant’ in het Piedmonts) bewijst de Italiaanse multi-muzikant Gigi Biolcati dat hij naast een goede componist ook een fraaie zanger is. Zowel in de folk georiënteerde stukken als in het jazzy ‘Serenada’ of het rocknummer ‘Musica‘ houdt hij zich moeiteloos staande. Hij zingt zeer geloofwaardig en heeft een warme en aimabele stem die aansluit bij landgenoot Maurizio Geri die we ook hoorden op albums van Ricardo Tesi. Gigi Biolcati is van huis uit drummer en percussionist die startte met musiceren in het begin van zijn tienerjaren. Hij trad aanvankelijk op met rock, blues en jazz-bands en verdiepte zich later in Afrikaanse ritmes. Dat breidde hij uit met body-percussie dat nu ook te horen is in ‘Piede, piede, mano‘ (aangevuld met ritmische kinderstemmen). Naast drums speelt Gigi Biolcati piano, gitaar en bas en creëert zo zijn eigen muzikale wereld die fluctueert tussen pop, rock en (experimentele) folk. Kleurrijke liedjes, met pakkende melodieën die door stevige ritmische ondersteuning lekker stuwend klinken. In het intieme slotstuk ‘L’amur‘ wordt hij bijgestaan door celliste Loredana Guarneri. Een prachtig kort liedje dat gevolgd wordt door een ‘hidden track‘; een verborgen opname die een reflectie is van een kort Italiaans gedicht. Voorgedragen in het Nederlands met de branding op de achtergrond aangevuld met subtiele percussie. Of zoals Gigi Biolcati het mij persoonlijk mailt: ‘A poem in the Dutch language in a Piedmontese dialect‘. Hoe persoonlijk wil je het hebben. Prachtige CD!

For quite a few years drummer and percussionist Gigi Biolcati makes music in the Italian folk scene, and to be heard on CDs by accordion player Ricardo Tesi. ‘Da Spunda‘ is Biolcati’s début solo album on which he plays all the instruments , sings and composed most of the songs.

The Italian multi-musician Gigi Biolcati proves on his solo album ‘Da Spunda‘ (The Other Side’ in the Piedmontese dialect) to be a good composer and a fine singer. Both in the folk-oriented pieces as the jazzy ‘Serenada’ or the rock song ‘Musica‘, he’s a great musician. His very credible, warm and amiable voice matches with his countryman Maurizio Geri (who also played in Ricardo Tesi’s band). Gigi Biolcati is originally a drummer and percussionist who started making music in his early teens. He initially played with rock, blues and jazz bands and later studied African rhythms. He expands his expertise with body percussion now also to be heard at ‘Piede, piede, mano‘, supplemented with lovely rhythmic children’s voices. Besides drums Gigi Biolcati plays piano, guitar and bass and creates his own musical world that fluctuates between pop, rock and (experimental) folk. Colourful songs with catchy melodies that sound pretty good, with a splendid rhythmic drive. In the last song of the album ‘L’amur’ he is assisted by cellist Loredana Guarneri. A wonderful short song followed by a hidden track; a reflection of a short Italian poem . Recited in Dutch with the background sound of the sea shore and some subtle percussion. Or as Gigi Biolcati me personally mailed: ‘A poem in the Dutch language in a Piedmontese dialect’. How personally can music be? Wonderful CD!
