‘Live in Hertme’ is de eerste CD die wordt uitgebracht met twee live opgenomen concerten die werden gemaakt tijdens het jaarlijks terugkerende Afrikafestival in Hertme (Twente). Op dit album staat een concertregistratie van kora-gigant (West-Afrikaanse harp) Sekou Kouyate en de groep Debademba (Burkina Faso/Mali) uit respectievelijk 2014 & 2015.

Het Afrikafestival in Hertme bestaat inmiddels drie decennia en is niet meer weg te denken uit de Nederlandse festivalgeschiedenis. Dit twee-daags evenement brengt een gevarieerd aanbod van fantastische Afrikaanse muziek waarmee het een onuitwisbare indruk achterlaat. Niet voor niets werd het Afrikafestival door Songlines gekozen tot een van de ’25 beste festivals van Europa’. Nu is er dan het album ‘Live in Hertme’ met twee live-registraties uit 2015 en 2014. De CD opent met vijf tracks van de kora-virtuoos Sekou Kouyate. Een musicus die inmiddels zijn muzikale sporen ruimschoots heeft verdiend. Hij trad op met Ba Cissoko, de groep Kassav, de Cubaanse pianist Roberto Fonseca en nam onlangs de bijzondere CD ‘Monistic Theory‘ met de Amerikaanse gitarist Joe Driscoll. Sekou Kouyate is een innovator die een natuurlijk gevoel heeft voor melodie en veelvuldig gebruik maakt van het wah-wah pedaal. Een gitaareffect dat we tegenkomen in de rock en funk. Hij is een bevlogen zanger en schrijft zijn eigen muziek die zeer energiek en ritmisch is en waarin hij de Afrikaanse muziek op originele wijze mengt met westerse pop en rock. Toen in 2015 Sekou op het allerlaatste moment kon invallen en per auto net op tijd het Afrikafestival bereikte, speelde hij een onvergetelijke set die nu te vinden is op ‘Live in Hertme‘.

De Malinese zanger Mohamed Diaby is het boegbeeld van de groep Debademba. Van dit concert vinden we ook een registratie op ‘Live in Hertme’, opgenomen juli 2014. Een optreden dat opvalt door zijn dynamiek; waar Malinese wassoulou ritmes organisch worden gemengd met Afro-funk, Ethiopische muziek, blues en rock. Gitarist Abdoulaye Traoré haalt alles uit kast en schittert in ‘Kiefali’, een stevige rhythm&blues met strakke Fender Rhodes, bas en drums. Zanger Mohamed Diaby heeft een onmiskenbaar Malinees stemgeluid met een rauw randje (prachtig in ‘Touma‘) dat hem excentriek maakt. Debademba maakt van elk optreden een happening. Ook in 2014, toen Nederland zich in de halve finale voetbal plaatste en het publiek zich massaal voor de buis schaarde, bereikte het concert van Debademba veel hoogtepunten. Mooi dat deze bijzondere avond nu steeds kan worden teruggeluisterd.

‘Live in Hertme‘ is the first CD to be released with two live recordings that were made during the Afrika Festival in Hertme (Twente/East of the Netherlands). One concert by the giant kora player (West African harp) Sekou Kouyate and the other by the band Debademba (Burkina Faso / Mali) respectively in 2014 and 2015.

For three decades the Afrikafestival in Hertme exists and has become an essential part of the Dutch festival history. This two-day event brings together a wide variety of great African music. Yes indeed, the African Festival was chosen by Songlines as one of the ’25 best festivals in Europe‘. Time for a compilation album ‘Live in Hertme’ with two live recordings from 2015 and 2014. The CD opens with five tracks of the kora virtuoso Sekou Kouyate. A very fine musician who performed with Ba Cissoko, the group Kassav, the Cuban pianist Roberto Fonseca and recently recorded the great CD ‘Monistic Theory‘ with the American guitarist Joe Driscoll. Sekou Kouyate is an innovator who has a natural feeling for melody. He uses the wah-wah pedal. A guitar effect that we encounter in rock and funk. He is a passionate singer and writes his own music. Energetic and rhythmic music in which he mixes African music in an original way with western pop and rock. In 2015 Sekou played a memorable set which is now released on ‘Live in Hertme‘.

The Malian singer Mohamed Diaby is the frontman of  Debademba. A great registration is recorded July 2014 and put on the second part of ‘Live in Hertme’. A performance that stands out for its dynamic music; where Malian Wassoulou rhythms are organicly mixed with Afro-funk, Ethiopian music, blues and rock. Guitarist Abdoulaye Traoré shows to be an incredible player in ‘Kiefali’, a solid rhythm & blues with tight Fender Rhodes piano, bass and drums. Singer Mohamed Diaby has a distinct Malian voice with a raw edge (beautifully in ‘Touma‘) that makes him eccentric. Debademba makes every concert to an event. Even in 2014, when the Netherlands are placed in the semi-final football match and the crowd was watching the game, the concert of Debademba reached many highlights. It’s good to have this particular night on this wonderful CD.
