Het album ‘Sacred Seed‘ van de Amerikaanse zangeres Pura Fé kwam al uit in 2015, en is gelukkig nu ook in Nederland verkrijgbaar. En dat is maar goed ook, want deze CD is meer dan de moeite waard. Zij weerspiegelt de muziek tegen haar Tuscarora Indianen achtergrond wat een verrassende mix oplevert van blues, country & folk.

Pura Fé is een nazaat van de Tuscarora Indianen, wat de reden is waarom ze tegenwoordig in Durham woont, een regio in North Carolina waar deze indianen vandaan komen. Op die plek voelt ze zich meer verbonden met haar culturele achtergrond waaronder taal en tradities. Met deze visie nam ze haar zevende CD ‘Sacred Seed’ op. Een prachtig door de Fransman Mathis Haug geproduceerd album. Mooie sobere instrumentatie van bas, gitaar, banjo, piano, cello, percussie en de aantrekkelijke zang van Pura Fé. Heerlijk wendbare vocalen met een rauw hees randje in de hoogte en een lichte  Bonnie Raitt touch (uitmuntend in ‘Treu Freedom’). Naast de twee covers ‘Spirit in the Sky‘ en Duke Ellington’s ‘In a Sentimental Mood‘, schrijft ze haar eigen liedjes en zingt in het Engels, Tuscarora, en Tutelo. Haar muziek beweegt zich over rand van folk, blues en country (fraai in ‘Mohomeneh‘), maar  ook haar Indianen-achtergrond blijft hoorbaar zoals in ‘Pigeon Dance‘ en ‘Idle No More’. Werkelijk schitterend is ‘Woman’s Shuffle’ waarin percussie, cello, gitaar en vooral meerstemmige zang de muziek richting gospel leidt. In ‘Hiyo Strireh’ horen we de grote kwaliteit van Pura Fé waarin ze kalm en laconiek de melodie fraai buigt net zoals in de country-blues in ‘Treu Freedom’. Pura Fé heeft de kwaliteit van een topzangeres, met hetzelfde gemak zingt ze ingetogen en uitbundig steeds met een losse, maar perfecte timing. Er komt niet vaak een album op de markt dat 5 sterren krijgt van de 5. ‘Sacred Seed’ wel: een CD die nu al in de top tien staat van 2016, al kwam dit album al uit in 2015. Voor goede muziek is het namelijk nooit te laat!

In 2015 the album ‘Sacred Seed‘ of the American singer Pura Fé was released. Now, 2016, the CD is also available in the Netherlands. Yes indeed, this music is worth listening. She reflects the music of her Tuscarora Indian background into a mix of blues, country and folk.

Pura Fé is a descendant of the Tuscarora Indians. That’s why she lives in Durham, a region in North Carolina where the Indians come from. In that region she feels connected to her cultural background, tradition and language. That’s the basic idea of her seventh album ‘Sacred Seed’. A wonderful record produced by the Frenchman Mathis Haug. Nice instrumentation of bass, guitar, banjo, piano, cello, percussion and the great vocals of Pura Fé. Wonderful vocals with a raw edge and a slight Bonnie Raitt touch (excellent in ‘Treu Freedom‘). Besides the two covers ‘Spirit in the Sky’ and Duke Ellington’s ‘In a Sentimental Mood‘, she writes her own songs and sings in English, Tuscarora, and Tutelo. Her music is a splendid mix of folk, blues and country (beautifully in ‘Mohomeneh’), but also her Indian background remains audible as in ‘Pigeon Dance’ and ‘Idle No More’. Truly magnificent is the song ‘Woman’s Shuffle‘ where percussion, cello, guitar and especially polyphonic singing lead the music to a gospel direction. In ‘Hiyo Strireh‘ we hear the great quality of Pura Fé in which she beautifully bends the melody, calm and laconic like she does in the country-blues ‘Treu Freedom’. Pura Fé has the quality of a top singer, with the same ease she sings restrained and exuberant with a splendid timing. It is not often an album gets 5 stars out of 5. ‘Sacred Seed‘ is already in the top ten of 2016, though this album has been released in 2015. For good music it’s never too late!
