‘Eleison’ is de titel van de CD waarop zangeres Nektaria Karantzi wordt begeleid door pianist (componist en dirigent) Vassilis Tsabropoulos. Een album met religieuze composities. Byzantijnse liederen die door Tsabropoulos werden gearrangeerd. Diepgaande Griekse middeleeuwse muziek die met veel passie wordt uitgevoerd.

Het muzikale balletje van de Griekse pianist Vassilis Tsabropoulos gaat al vroeg rollen. Als tien jarig kind wint hij de Unicef competitie en studeert aan de Conservatoria in Athena, Parijs, Salzburg en de Juilliard School of Music in Amerika. Bovendien ontwikkelt hij zich tot componist en schrijft o.a. een strijkkwartet en zes piano preludes. De laatste jaren houdt Tsabropoulos zich ook bezig met jazz, met een duidelijk klassiek randje en brengt albums uit met religieuze muziek waaronder ‘Chant Hymns and Dances‘ en ‘Melos’ met o.a. celliste Anja Lechner. Op ‘Eleison‘ horen we hem samen met de Grieks Byzantijnse zangeres Nektaria Karantzi. Een ongekend fraaie combinatie waarbij de oude (middeleeuwse) Byzantijnse muziek in een organische flow naar het heden wordt vertaald. De stem van Nektaria Karantzi is uiterst geschikt voor deze breekbare muziek. Haar stem is gevoelig, klein en ingetogen en bevat steeds de juiste dosering die onontbeerlijk is voor deze serene muziek. De piano heeft enerzijds een begeleidende rol, anderzijds zijn de piano-intro’s, interlude’s en coda’s al pareltjes op zich, zeer transparant en bekwaam gespeeld, met ‘Bells’ en ‘The Day After‘ als enige solostukken. Op ‘Eleison‘ staan hymnen, klaagzangen, psalmen die door Vassilis Tsabropoulos zijn bewerkt tot schitterende eigentijdse composities, waarbij ook de niet-religieuze luisteraar ontroerd zal worden door de schoonheid van deze tijdloze muziek.

‘Eleison’ is the name of the CD on which singer Nektaria Karantzi is accompanied by pianist (composer and conductor) Vassilis Tsabropoulos. An album with religious compositions; Byzantine songs arranged by Tsabropoulos. Profound Greek medieval music performed with passion.

As a ten year old child Vassilis Tsabropoulos wins the UNICEF contest. He studied at the Conservatories in Athena, Paris, Salzburg and the Juilliard School of Music in America. Moreover, he developed himself into a composer and wrote a String Quartet and Six Piano Preludes. In recent years Tsabropoulos is also engaged in jazz, with a clear edge to classic music. He also recorded albums with religious music including ‘Chant Hymns and Dances‘ and ‘Melos‘ with cellist Anja Lechner. On ‘Eleison‘ we hear him with the Greek Byzantine singer Nektaria Karantzi. An incredibly beautiful combination in which the old (medieval) Byzantine music is translated to the present in an organic way. The voice of Nektaria Karantzi suits extremely well to this fragile music. Her voice is delicate and subdued and still contains the right flow which is so essential for this serene music. The piano part is lovely played by Tsabropoulos. Wonderful interludes create a beautiful atmosphere. The compositions ‘The Day After‘ and ‘Bells‘ are the only solo piano pieces. On this album ‘Eleison‘ there are hymns, laments, psalms all arranged by Vassilis Tsabropoulos into beautiful contemporary compositions. Also the non-religious listener will be moved by the beauty of this timeless music.
