Julian Lage is een veelzijdig Amerikaans gitarist die naast zijn solo-projecten ook speelt in de band van vibrafonist Gary Burton’s New Quartet en in de groep Voyager van drummer Eric Harland. In maart 2016 verscheen zijn nieuwe trio-CD ‘Arclight’. Een breed prospectief album van een getalenteerd musicus.

Julian Lage is een veelvuldig gevraagd muzikant. Hij speelde o.a. met de legendarische gitarist Jim Hall, violist Mark O’Conner, pianist Fred Hersch en banjo-gigant Béla Fleck. Qua speeltechniek sluit hij aan bij de Amerikaanse gitarist Nir Felder die, net als Julian Lage, frequent gebruik maakt van fraaie akkoord-thema’s, op een elektrische Fender gitaar speelt en deze ook hier en daar laat rafelen met een fuzzy randje. Prachtige ingrediënten voor de (rauwe) trio-CD ‘Arclight’ die Lage opnam met bassist Scott Colley en drummer Kenny Wollesen. Hij is een accuraat gitarist die zorgvuldig de sound van zijn gitaar kiest die bij de diverse stijlen hoort die hij speelt; met vervorming, veel galm of een droog compact gitaargeluid. En die stijlen zijn talrijk. Zo is ‘Persian Rug‘ een blauwdruk van een Hot-Club-de-France melodie (met strakke brushes van de drums), horen we pop invloeden in het prachtige en open gearrangeerde ‘Nocturne‘, klinkt er een country-feel in ‘Harlem Blues‘ (geschreven door W.C. Handy) en heeft de afsluiter ‘Ryland‘ een Gospel/soul thema. Bijzonder is ook ‘Presley’ waar de bas de melodie speelt, omgeven door korte ritmische gitaarpatronen. Nergens wordt een stijl uitgesproken gespeeld maar zijn steeds kenmerken te vinden die de ziel van het genre raakt. Soms heel subtiel, dan weer overduidelijk maar steeds zeer ingenieus, verzorgd en met aandacht. Julian Lage schreef de meeste stukken en toont zich een meester in de ‘kunst van het weglaten’, een meester van de suggestie, wat de fraaie signatuur is voor ‘Arclight’.

Julian Lage is a versatile American guitarist who plays alongside his solo projects in the band of vibraphonist Gary Burton’s New Quartet and in Voyager, a group of drummer Eric Harland. In March 2016 Julian Lage released his new trio CD ‘Arclight‘. A wide album with a  prospective vision by talented musicians.

Julian Lage is a frequently asked musician. He played inter alia with the legendary guitarist Jim Hall, violinist Mark O’Connor, pianist Fred Hersch and banjo giant Béla Fleck. His way of playing reminds to the American guitarist Nir Felder who, like Julian Lage, frequently uses beautiful chord themes, plays on an electric Fender guitar and also adds a fuzzy edge by using a little distortion. Wonderful ingredients for the (raw) trio album ‘Arclight‘ that Lage recorded with bassist Scott Colley and drummer Kenny Wollesen. He is an accurate guitarist who carefully choose his guitar sounds which is associated with the various styles he plays; using distortion, a lot of reverb lot or a dry compact guitar sound. And the styles he play are numerous. For example, ‘Persian Rug‘ a blueprint of a Hot-Club-de-France melody (with tight brushes on the drums), we hear pop influences in the beautiful and open arranged ‘Nocturne‘, a country-feel in ‘Harlem Blues‘ (written by W.C. Handy) and there is a gospel / soul theme in the closing piece ‘Ryland‘. Another special feature is ‘Presley’ where the bass plays the melody, surrounded by short rhythmic guitar patterns. All the pieces have characteristics that touches the soul of the genre. Sometimes subtle, sometimes obvious but always very ingenious and attentively played. Julian Lage wrote almost all the music in which he’s a master of suggestion and improvisation. Only play the notes who really matters, which becomes the wonderful signature of his album ‘Arclight‘.
