Izaline Calister is al jaren de ambassadrice van de muziek uit Curaçao waar ze in 1969 werd geboren. Jarenlang mengt ze de muziek uit haar geboorte-eiland met jazz en pop. Met haar nieuwe CD ‘Rayo di Lus’ (Lichtstraal) keert ze terug naar haar roots – liedjes gezongen in het papiamento die ze o.a. samen met haar broer Roël Calister schreef.

De prachtige zangeres Izaline Calister kreeg in 1995 al enige bekendheid door haar bijdrage aan het album ‘Dance Jazz live‘ van de Nederlandse pianist Jasper van ’t Hof (Pili Pili). In 2001 verschijnt het door haar gezongen lied ‘Fiesta di Piskado’ (van Rudy Plaate) op de verzamel-CD ABC Island Primer waarmee ze internationaal wordt gelanceerd. Maar het muzikale balletje gaat pas echt rollen & stuiteren als haar twee solo-CD’s ‘Krioyo‘ (2004) en ‘Kanta Hélelé’ uit 2006 worden uitgebracht. Calister slaat hiermee een gigantische brug tussen de Caribische en de Westerse pop en jazzmuziek. Met een glasheldere stem, aimabel charisma en fraaie liedjes slaagt zij erin een enorme schare fans aan zich te binden. Dat zal ook gebeuren bij haar nieuwste release ‘Rayo di Lus‘ (Lichtstraal) waar weliswaar meer gebruik gemaakt wordt van samples en elektronica, met zelfs een four-on-the flour in ‘Kou mi Numa‘. Calister keert terug naar de Caribische roots, zingt in het papiamento, met veel gebruik van opzwepende ritmes. Ze wordt o.a. bijgestaan door broer Roël op percussie, bassist Jeroen Vierdag, gastvocalist Ron Martis (‘Reina di Pordon‘) en producer Ward Veenstra op snaarinstrumenten en programming. Opmerkelijk is de uitvoering van ‘Telkens Weer‘ (van Willeke Alberti) waarmee ze het Nederlands vocaal cultureel erfgoed optilt boven zijn eigen waarde. Fraai zijn ook de kleine ornamenten zoals het random orgel in het intro van ‘AAAAH‘, de slide-gitaar in ‘Blue Curacao‘ of de benta (een-snarig percussie instrument uit Curacao) in ‘Mi ke ku mi stime‘. De CD opent en sluit met een lied met harp begeleiding. Prachtig gespeeld door Astid Haring die met haar glissando’s kietelt lang de vocalen van Izaline. ‘Rayo di Lus’ is een lust voor het oor waarmee Izaline Calister ons land opwarmt met een innig Caribische flair.

For years Izaline Calister is the ambassador of the music of Curaçao, where she was born in 1969. For years she mixes the music of her native island with jazz and pop. On her new album ‘Rayo di Lus‘ she returns to her roots – songs in Papiamento. Together with her brother Roël Calister she wrote most of the songs.

In 1995 the great singer Izaline Calister worked with the Dutch pianist Jasper van ’t Hof (Pili Pili) on his album ‘Dance Jazz live‘. In 2001, her song ‘Fiesta di Piskado’ (by Rudy Plaate) was releases on the compilation CD ABC Island Primer on which her music was released internationally. But after the release of her two solo albums ‘Krioyo’ (2004) and ‘Kanta Helele’ in 2006 her fame grew more and more. With her crystal-clear voice, amiable charisma and beautiful songs Calister builds a huge bridge between the Caribbean and Western pop and jazz music. On her latest release ‘Rayo di Lus‘ she uses samples and electronics, even with a four-on-the flour in the song ‘Kou mi Numa‘. Calister returns to her Caribbean roots, sings in Papiamento, with the exciting use of rousing rhythms. She’s mostly assisted by brother Roël on percussion, bassist Jeroen Vierdag, guest vocalist Ron Martis (on ‘Reina di Pordon‘) and producer Ward Veenstra on stringed instruments and programming. Noteworthy is the performance of ‘Telkens Weer’ (by Willeke Alberti). A famous Dutch song on which she lifts the Dutch vocal cultural heritage. Beautiful are also the small musical ornaments such as random organ in the intro of ‘AAAAH‘, the slide guitar in ‘Blue Curacao’ or the benta (one-stringed percussion instrument from Curacao) in ‘Mi ke ku mi stime’. The CD opens and closes with a song with harp accompaniment. Beautifully played by Astid Herring with its glissandi string chords that tickles the vocals of Izaline. ‘Rayo di Lus’ is a lovely record on which she warms the Netherlands with her bright Caribbean atmosphere..
