Na tien jaar en honderden concerten brengt de Duitse band Mo’ Blow hun album ‘Live in Berlin‘ uit, opgenomen augustus 2015 in jazzclub de A-Trane in Berlijn. Met enkele gastmusici, waaronder zangeres Pat Appleton, violist Adam Baldych, vibrafonist Franz Bauer en trombonist Nils Landgren speelt dit kwartet een bijzonder strakke en energieke set.

Alhoewel live opgenomen pop- en jazzmuziek vaak te wensen overlaat, is deze ‘Live in Berlin’ van het funky kwartet Mo’ Blow een verademing. Het prachtig opgenomen drumwerk vol ghost-notes en de ferme baspartijen zorgen voor een solide basis waarover de warme Fender Rhodes-piano (virtuose solo in ‘Ricky the Lobster‘) en saxen de thema’s spelen en vitaal soleren. Saxofonist Felix Falk speelt naast alt- ook baritonsax en toont zich een ware acrobaat op dit instrument waarmee hij wendbaar soleert en fraai mêleert binnen het funky idioom. Zo opent ‘Live in Berlin’ met een markant stukje baritonsax dat doet denken aan de opening van Joshua Redman’s album ‘Freedom in the Groove’ uit 1996. En excentriek mooi is ook het unisono gespeelde thema van ‘Fried Chocolate’ samen met mondharmonicaspeler Kacper Smolinski. Gastzangeres Pat Appelton schittert in ‘No Particular Way‘. Zij is de funky versie van Carmen Mc Crea met dezelfde lazy timing in de brug van dit lied. De ietwat obligate zang in ‘Rolling in the Deep’ (Adele) van de Zweedse musicus Nils Landgren wordt goed gemaakt door diens voortreffelijk trombonewerk, dat we ook horen in het nummer ‘Count XVII’ aangevuld met didgeridoo. De frisse vibrafoon van gastmuzikant Franz Bauer tenslotte, geeft het dansende ‘Along with Mag‘ een extra flair en maakt van ‘Live in Berlin’ een gevarieerd feestje. Een concert waarbij je moeiteloos de energie volgt van deze muzikanten in een prachtig evenement. Voortreffelijke CD!

After ten years and hundreds of concerts the German band Mo’ Blow recorded their album ‘Live in Berlin‘ at the jazz club A-Trane in Berlin August 2015. With a few guest musicians, including singer Pat Appleton, violinist Adam Baldych, vibraphonist Franz Bauer and trombonist Nils Landgren this quartet plays a particularly tight and energetic set.

Not every live registration of pop and jazz music is recorded very well, but ‘Live in Berlin’ by the funky quartet Mo ‘Blow is quite a relief. Lovely drums (full of ghost notes) and firm bass provide a solid foundation on which the warm Fender Rhodes piano (virtuoso solo in ‘Ricky the Lobster’) and saxophones play themes and solos. Saxophonist Felix Falk plays alongside alto sax also baritone sax and shows to be a true acrobat on this instrument with fine solos that beautifully fits into the funky idiom. ‘Live in Berlin’ opens with a striking piece on the baritone sax. A reminiscent of the opening song of Joshua Redman’s album ‘Freedom in the Groove’ from 1996. And eccentric beautiful is the unison played theme of ‘Fried Chocolate’ with harmonica player Kacper Smolinski. Guest singer Pat Appelton shines in ‘No Particular Way‘. She is the funky version of Carmen Mc Crea with the same lazy timing in the bridge of this song. The somewhat obligatory singing of the Swedish musician Nils Landgren in ‘Rolling in the Deep’ (Adele) is compensate by his outstanding trombone work in the song ‘Count XVII’, where also the didgeridoo is added. The fresh vibraphone of guest musician Franz Bauer gives the jittery piece ‘Along with Mag’ an extra flair and makes ‘Live in Berlin’ a diverse party. A concert where you effortlessly follow the energy of these fine musicians in a splendid event. Excellent CD!
