De Haïtiaanse groep Lakou Mizik is onlosmakelijk verbonden met de aardbeving die dit Caribische land trof in 2010. Nu, zo’n 6 jaar later, hebben jonge en oude musici zich verenigd en brengen het album ‘Wa Di Yo’ (‘Nou La Toujour‘) – (‘Tell Them We’re Still Here‘) op de markt. Inderdaad ‘Vertel Hen We zijn er Nog‘ – en hoe….!

Haïti deelt het eiland met de Dominicaanse Republiek. Naast de merengue (die een variant is op die van de Dom. Republiek) vinden we er onder andere de kompas, voodoo, gospel en hip-hop met Wyclef Jean als meest succesvolle artiest van het moment. Maar daar komt verandering in met Lakou Mizik. Een groep die wordt opgericht door gitarist Steeve Vacourt en zanger Jonas Attis vlak na de verwoestende aardbeving in de zomer van 2010. Ze gaan op zoek naar zangers, percussionisten, gitarist, accordeonist en naar een rara hoornspeler (een hoorn die bijvoorbeeld wordt gebruikt tijdens het Paasfeest). Zo ontstaat Lakou Mizik, een optimistisch gezelschap met jonge en oude musici die zich toeleggen op het behouden van de Haïtiaanse muziekcultuur. Ze spelen zowel traditioneel als nieuw repertoire en geven lange concerten, spelen in kerken, tijdens politieke bijeenkomsten en voodoo rituelen. Tijd voor de debuut-CD waarop Lakou Mizik zich presenteert met een geraffineerde mix van Afrikaans, Franse, Caribische en Amerikaanse invloeden. We horen de Haïtiaanse merengue ‘Is Fa Ti Bo’ (met een voortreffelijke accordeon), de voor- en nazang in ‘Parenn Legba‘ en ‘Bade Zile’ en het onovertroffen ‘Anba Siklòn‘ dat met zijn zwierende melodie meteen een klassieker mag worden genoemd. Lakou Mizik is energiek, opzwepend en heeft een levenslustige uitstraling, wat maar weer eens bewijst hoe sterk de kracht van muziek kan zijn. Zeker als je bedenkt wat dit Caribische land heeft moeten doorstaan na die alles verwoestende aardbeving – petje af!

The Haitian group Lakou Mizik is inextricably linked to the earthquake that struck the Caribbean nation in 2010. Now, some six years later, young and old musicians united and released their album ‘Wa Tu Yo La Nou Toujour‘ (‘Tell Them We’re Still Here’). Yes indeed, they are!

Haïti shares the island with the Dominican Republic. Besides the merengue (a variation is played like the Dom. Republic version), we find music styles like the compas, voodoo, gospel and hip-hop with Wyclef Jean as the most successful artist of the moment. But that will change with such a great band like Lakou Mizik. A group founded by guitarist Steeve Vacourt and singer Jonas Attis shortly after the devastating earthquake in the summer of 2010. They start looking for singers, percussionists, guitarist, accordionist and a rara horn player (a horn which is used for example during Easter). Lakou Mizik was born, an optimistic ensemble with young and old musicians dedicated to the preservation of Haitian music culture. They play both traditional and new repertoire and give concerts, playing in churches, at political meetings and voodoo rituals. Time to record their début CD ‘Wa Di Yo, Nou La Toujour‘ on which Lakou Mizik plays a refined blend of African, French, Caribbean and American music. We hear the Haitian merengue ‘Is Fa Ti Bo’ (with a lovely accordion), the call-and-respond singing in ‘Parenn Legba’ and ‘Bade Zile’ and the absolute great song ‘Anba Siklòn‘. Already a classic song after the release of this CD. The music of Lakou Mizik is energetic, exciting and has a lively appearance, which once again proves how strong the power of music can be. Especially when you realise what this Caribbean country has been through after this devastating earthquake. Kudos to you!
