De Israëlische muzikant, zanger en pianist Idan Raichel bracht een aantal CD’s uit met zijn ‘Idan Raichel Project’ en ‘The Touré-Raichel Collective‘. Zijn nieuwste album ‘At the Edge of the Beginning’ brengt hij uit onder zijn eigen naam, en ook nu schrijft en zingt hij (bijna) alle stukken en wordt bijgestaan door gastmusici in een ‘global musical vision‘.

Idan Raichel doet op zijn nieuwe album een stap terug. Sobere muziek, met weinig instrumenten en nauwelijks elektronica vormen de basis van zijn werk. ‘At the Edge of the Beginning’ (Op de Rand van het Begin) lijkt hierdoor een nieuwe start. Raichel is al jaren een muzikant die opvalt door zijn heldere, herkenbare en (emotioneel) beladen melodieën. Ook nu op dit betrekkelijk korte album (32 min.) staan weer een paar bijzonder fraaie stukken. Zoals ‘Ha’Yad Ha’Chama’, ‘Ba’Yeshimon’ met de kamanche (soort Iraanse viool) of het prachtige door Dana Zalah gezongen ‘Ga’agua‘. Steeds gaat Raichel op zoek naar harmonie dat zowel in zijn muziek als in zijn Hebreeuwse teksten tot uiting komt. Teksten over liefde, kinderen of de vergankelijkheid van het leven. Hij gebruikt naast de piano, gitaar, kamanche en percussie ook de Turkse saz. In het ‘Be’Chamesh Shniyot‘ horen we zelfs de guembri (van de Marokkaanse Gnawa muziek) en de elektrische baglama en in het lied ‘Ma’agalim’ (Cirkels) een voortreffelijke accordeonsolo van Vitaly Podolsky. Idan Raichel is een superster in Israël, werkte o.a. met Alicia Keys, Patrick Bruel, de Colombiaanse zangeres Marta Gomez countertenor Andreas Scholl en de Malinese gitarist Vieux Farka-Touré (‘The Touré-Raichel Collective‘) en gaf concerten over de hele wereld. Zijn muziek danst over de rand van pop, jazz en wereldmuziek en daardoor moeilijk in één stijl te vatten. Des te beter; gewoon luisteren en genieten!

Idan Raichel is an Israelian musician, singer and pianist who released CDs with his ‘Idan Raichel Project’ and ‘The Touré-Raichel Collective‘. His latest album ‘At the Edge of the Beginning’ is a releases under his own name. Again he composed and sings (almost) all the songs, assisted by guest musicians in a global musical vision.

Idan Raichel plays sober music, with just a few instruments and hardly electronics. ‘At the Edge of the Beginning‘ seems to be a new start in his career. Raichel has always been a musician who stands for clear, recognizable and (emotional) melodies. Again, this relatively short album (32 min.) shows some very beautiful pieces. Like ‘Ha’Yad Ha’Chama’, ‘Ba’Yeshimon’ with the kamanche (kind of Iranian violin) or the beautiful ‘Ga’agua’ sung by Dana Zalah. Raichel always looks for harmony which is reflected in both his music and in his Hebrew texts. Lyrics about love, children or the transience of life. He used alongside the piano, guitar, percussion and kamanche also the Turkish saz. In the song ‘Be’Chamesh Shniyot’ we even hear the guembri (used in the Moroccan Gnawa music) and the electric baglama. ‘Ma’agalim’ (Circles) is marked with a splendid accordion solo by Vitaly Podolsky. Idan Raichel is a superstar in Israel, among others, he worked with Alicia Keys, Patrick Bruel, the Colombian singer Marta Gomez, counter tenor Andreas Scholl and the Malian guitarist Vieux Farka-Touré (‘The Touré-Raichel Collective) and has given concerts all over the world. His music is mix of pop, jazz and world music, and therefore hard to fit in any style. So much the better; just listen and enjoy. Splendid music!
