Riccardo Tesi is een Italiaans diatonsich accordeonist en musicoloog, gespecialiseerd in folk. Onlangs verschenen van hem twee albums: ‘Maggio’ met zijn Banditaliana. En ‘Bella Ciao‘, een samenwerking van Riccardo Tesi met de vooraanstaande Italiaanse vocalisten Lucilla Galeazzi, Elena Ledda, Ginevra Di Marco en Alessio Lega.

Riccardo Tesi is al jaren een van de boegbeelden van de Italiaanse folkmuziek. Zowel met zijn band Banditaliana als met de vele musici waar hij mee speelde waaronder saxofonist Gianluigi Trovesi, de Franse mandolinespeler Patrick Vaillant en zanger/gitarist Fabrizio De André. Op ‘Maggio‘ is hij helemaal terug waar we hem van kennen. Fraaie bewerkte muziek, zowel eigen werk als bestaande stukken, gespeeld op saxofoon, gitaar en percussie en Riccardo Tesi zelf natuurlijk op de diatonische accordeon. Hij is een virtuoos op zijn instrument, die er steeds voor zorgt dat de accordeon prachtig mêleert binnen de arrangementen, waar instrumenten elkaar zo prachtig aanvullen en de band een rijk signatuur laat horen. Afwisseling in B-gedeelten leveren een markante variatie op, die hier en daar de muziek door originaliteit laat zinderen. Er schuiven regelmatig gastmusici aan bij Banditaliana. Zo ook op ‘Maggio‘ waar naast pianist Lanzoni en de violisten Savarese en Durante ook werkelijk een banda (blaasorkest) meespeelt. Op het uitgekauwde ‘Rosamunda‘ horen we Fanfara Tirana in een heerlijk ritmisch pompende versie. Zanger Maurizio Geri, die al jaren lid is van Banditaliana, vult met zijn zacht en behaaglijk timbre enkele stukken, bijgestaan door Gigi Biolcati, vooral schitterend in het openingsstuk ‘Maggio del Crinale‘ (zie YouTube onder). Op organische wijze schudt Riccardo Tesi de folkmuziek door elkaar. Hij schrapt, voegt toe en improviseert zonder de folk-kern los te laten. Hij doet dat op zo’n energieke en doortastende wijze dat er eigentijdse folk ontstaat die innovatief en ongeëvenaard goed is!

Op het album ‘Bella Ciao‘ treffen we Riccardo Tesi in gezelschap van de zangeressen Lucilla Galeazzi, Elena Ledda, Ginevra Di Marco en zanger Alessio Lega – vier vooraanstaande folk en politieke zangers uit Italië. ‘Bella Ciao’ is een Yiddische melodie, bijna een eeuw oud, en door de jaren heen uitgegroeid tot een lied van vrede en bevrijding. Hét thema voor deze cd, waar oude bekende Italiaanse liedjes worden geherinterpreteerd. Het resultaat is een Italiaans album waar vier vocalisten op sobere wijze worden begeleid en zingen over migratie, eerlijkheid, racisme, gevangenschap of religie. Puur en ongerept!

Riccardo Tesi is an Italian diatonic accordion player and musicologist specialized in folk music. Recently he released two new albums: ‘Maggio‘ with his Banditaliana. And ‘Bella Ciao‘, a collaboration of Riccardo Tesi with the leading Italian vocalists Lucilla Galeazzi, Elena Ledda, Ginevra di Marco and Alessio Lega.

Riccardo Tesi is one of the major artists of the Italian folk music. Both with his band Banditaliana and the many musicians he played with, like saxophonist Gianluigi Trovesi, the French mandolin player Patrick Vaillant and singer / guitarist Fabrizio De André. On ‘Maggio’ he is back again in his well known musical way. Fine music, with new pieces and original work, played on saxophone, guitar and percussion and Riccardo Tesi on the diatonic accordion off course. He is a virtuoso on his instrument which fits very well in the arrangements which are played tight and give Banditaliana a splendid and original sound. There are always some guest musicians who play with Banditaliana such as pianist Lanzoni and the violinists Savarese and Durante. This time there’s also a real banda (brass band) which participates. On the well-known ‘Rosamunda‘ Fanfara Tirana plays a wonderful and rhythmic version.  Singer Maurizio Geri, who has been a member of Banditaliana for years now, has a fine charming voice, assisted by Gigi Biolcati, brilliant in the opening piece ‘Maggio del Crinale‘ (see YouTube above). For years Riccardo Tesi creates a new kind of contemporary folk music. Innovative and energetic and always with a folk heart in the centre. Splendid!

Riccardo Tesi’s new album ‘Bella Ciao’ is a collobaration with the singers Lucilla Galeazzi, Elena Ledda, Ginevra di Marco and Alessio Lega. Four famous folk and political singers from Italy. ‘Bella Ciao‘ is a Yiddish melody, almost a century old. Over the years it has become thé song of peace and liberation. A wonderfull theme for this CD, where old famous Italian songs are reinterpreted. Varied music about migration, honesty, racism, detention or religion in a pure and exquisite way!
