Zanger Dizu Plaatjies was jarenlang de leider van de legendarische Zuid-Afrikaanse band Amapondo en het Ibuyambo Ensemble. Op zijn nieuwe album ‘Ubuntu – The Common String’ keert hij terug naar de Zuid-Afrikaanse muziek waarbij hij veel gebruik maakt van snaarinstrumenten. Zelf bespeelt hij o.a. de Ugandese bow harp en wordt bijgestaan door zo’n 17 musici.

In 1979 richtte Dizu Plaatjies de percussiegroep Amapondo op: een van de meest enerverende Zuid Afrikaanse groepen. Kenmerkend door de ritmische energie en een veelvoud aan stijlen klonk deze groep als een organisch amalgama. Dat vinden we ook terug op zijn nieuwe solo-CD ‘Ubuntu – The Common String’ waarop hij blues, rock, jazz en Zuid Afrikaanse ritmes afwisselt en waarop snaarinstrumenten centraal staan, waaronder de elektrisch & (12-string) akoestisch gitaar en de Ugandese bow harp die door Plaatjies zelf wordt bespeeld. Maar ook klinkt er rijke percussie: marimba, talking drums, balofon en de drumkit van onze landgenoot Lucas van Merwijk. Opvallende fraai is de trompetsolo in ‘Ithemba Liyadanisa’, het Noord Afrikaanse ‘Izalwa Algiers’ en een ode aan Mandela (‘Mandela Afrika‘). De verkeersdrukte horen we terug in ‘Traffic iJemile‘ waar Plaatjies de Ugandese bow harp speelt die enigszins lijkt op een laag gestemde Braziliaanse berimbau. Verrassend is de bonustrack ‘Malaika‘. Een klassieker van de legendarische Miriam Makeba, gezongen door Thabisa Dinga. Zij is naast een voortreffelijk danseres (zie youtube) ook een fraaie zangeres met een frisse stem. Met ‘Ubuntu – The Common String’ raakt Dizu Plaatjies and Friends de ziel van Zuid-Afrikaanse muziek: daadkrachtig en zeer gevarieerd!

For many years singer Dizu Plaatjies was the leader of the legendary South African band Amapondo and Ibuyambo Ensemble. On his new album ‘Ubuntu – The Common String‘ he returns to the South African music by the use of a lot of string instruments. He himself plays the Ugandan bow harp and is assisted by seventeen musicians.

In 1979 Dizu Plaatjies founded the percussion group Amapondo: one of the most exciting South African groups. Typically, by the rhythmic energy and a plurality of styles sounded this group as an organic amalgam. That’s also reflected on his new solo CD ‘Ubuntu – The Common String‘ on which we find blues, rock, jazz and South African rhythms played on different stringed instruments, including the electric & (12-string) acoustic guitar and the Ugandan bow harp played by Plaatjies himself. But there’s also the lovely sounds of percussion: marimba, talking drums, balofon and the drum kit of our compatriot Lucas van Merwijk. Notable is the beautiful trumpet solo in ‘Ithemba Liyadanisa‘, the North African song ‘Izalwa Algiers‘ and a tribute to Mandela (Mandela Africa). The traffic can be heard in ‘Traffic iJemile’ where Plaatjies played the Ugandan bow harp, that resembles a low pitched Brazilian berimbau. Surprisingly is the bonus track ‘Malaika‘. A classic song from the legendary Miriam Makeba, performed by Thabisa Dinga. She is besides an excellent dancer (see YouTube above) also a fine singer with a fresh and clear voice. On the album ‘Ubuntu – The Common String’ Dizu Plaatjies and Friends touches the soul of South African music: energetic and very varied!
