In september 2015 werd de Estse componist Arvo Pärt tachtig jaar. Reden voor het uitbrengen van twee DVD’s waarop Pärt samenwerkt met de Amerikaanse regisseur Robert Wilson. Op ‘Adam’s Passion‘ staat een integrale uitvoering door het Tallinn Chamber Orchestra en het Estonina Philhamonic Chamber Choir o.l.v. Töni Kaljust met visual art & design van Robert Wilson. Op ‘The Lost Paradise‘ zien we hoe deze prachtige samenwerking tot stand is gekomen. Een schitterend document!

Zowel Pärt als Wilson hebben een enorme staat van dienst: Arvo Pärt (1935) is een vooraanstaand componist uit Estland van wie zeer veel werken internationaal werden uitgevoerd. Visual art & design regisseur Robert Wilson (1941) werkte o.a. samen met Tom Waits, Philip Glass en Rufus Wainwright. Voor het eerst werken Pärt en Wilson samen voor de voorstelling ‘Adam’s Passion‘. Arvo Pärt selecteerde een aantal van zijn bekendste werken: ‘Adam’s Lament’, ‘Misere’, ‘Tabula Rasa’ en het nieuw gecomponeerde ‘Sequentia’ die live werden uitgevoerd in een voormalige Sovjet onderzeeër loods in Tallinn. De première vond plaats op 12 mei 2015 en is nu uitgebracht op de DVD ‘Adam’s Passion‘. Het resultaat is magistraal. In een decor van licht, beeldende mensen, orkest en koor word je betoverd in een algehele sensatie waarbij alle disciplines in een sacrale sfeer samenkomen. Bijzonder fraai vormgegeven podium met ‘catwalk’ waardoor het publiek als het ware deel uitmaakt van het podium. De ‘dansers’ bewegen (zeer) langzaam en zijn veelal schaars gekleed wat mooi aansluit bij de muziek van Arvo Pärt die componeert vanuit stilte en soberheid. Zijn composities ademen een serene rust uit en een voelbare kalmte. Alhoewel ‘Adam’s Lament’ of ‘Tabula Rasa’ zeker energieke passages bevatten, blijft de muziek in de kern puur en vredig. Doortastend live uitgevoerd door het Tallinn Chamber Orchestra en het Estonina Ph. Chamber Choir o.l.v. Grammy Award winnaar Töni Kaljust. De muziek van Arvo Pärt krijgt door de choreografie van Robert Wilson een extra lading en wint in diepgang. Voortreffelijke productie!

In September 2015 the Estonian composer Arvo Pärt was eighty years old. Reason for the release of two DVDs; ‘Adam’s Passion’ and ‘The Lost Paradise’. Pärt cooperates for the first time with the American director Robert Wilson. The DVD ‘Adam’s Passion‘ is a complete performance by the Tallinn Chamber Orchestra and the Philhamonic Estonnia Chamber Choir conducted by Toni Kaljust with the visual art & design by Robert Wilson. ‘The Lost Paradise‘ is ’the making of’ – a wonderful document!

Both Pärt and Wilson are wonderful artists: Arvo Pärt (1935) is a leading Estonian composer whose compositions were performed all over the world. Visual art & design director Robert Wilson (1941) has worked for example with Tom Waits, Philip Glass and Rufus Wainwright. For the first time Pärt and Wilson work together for the production ‘Adam’s Passion‘. Arvo Pärt has selected some of his best known works: ‘Adam’s Lament’, ‘Misere’, ‘Tabula Rasa‘ and the newly composed ‘Sequentia’ that were live performed in a former Soviet submarine hangar in Tallinn. The premiere took place on May 12, 2015 and has now been released on DVD ‘Adam’s Passion‘. The result is masterly. In a wonderful light design, moving dancers, orchestra and choir you will be fascinated in an overall sensation where all disciplines come together in a sacred atmosphere. The stage is enlarged with a ‘catwalk’ so the audience is a part of the stage. The ‘dancers’ move (very) slowly and are often scantily dressed. A wonderful expression of Arvo Pärt’s music who composes silence and sobriety. His compositions exude a serenity and a palpable calm. Although ‘Adam’s Lament’ or ‘Tabula Rasa‘ certainly contain energetic passages, the music remains pure and peaceful. Vigorous performed live by the Tallinn Chamber Orchestra and the Philharmonic Estonian Chamber Choir, conducted by Grammy Award winner Toni Kaljust. The music of Arvo Pärt gets through Robert Wilson’s choreography a new colourful view in a wonderful performance. Excellent production!
