De Zeeuwse gitarist & (blues)zanger Ries de Vuyst werd dit jaar (2015) zestig. Samen met zijn linkshandige gitaar, die 40 jaar geleden special voor hem werd gebouwd, zijn ze ‘Oondert‘ (Honderd). Een mooi rond getal en reden voor een jubileum-CD. Hij won twee keer de wedstrijd ‘Zing Zeeuws!’ in 2010 en 2012 en bracht inbetween (2011) zijn debuut-album ‘Killing the Blues’ uit.

Ries de Vuyst draait al heel wat jaren mee, maar het duurt tot 2011 voordat hij zijn eerste album opneemt. Zijn stijl balanceert over (rhythm &) blues, folk, country en Hot Club de France en heeft door de sobere bezetting een landelijke en soms mijmerende sfeer. De Vuyst wordt geboren in Breskens, woont in Gent en zingt in het Zeeuws dialect: goed te volgen doordat de teksten zijn afgedrukt in het bijgeleverde boekje. Hij schrijft zijn eigen liedjes, begeleidt zichzelf op gitaar en wordt bijgestaan door acht gastmusici. Opvallend zijn de huilende mondharmonica van Gait Klein Kromhog en de zigeunerswing van gitarist Vincent Chambon. Ries de Vuyst zingt over verdriet, sprookjes en familie en zijn lied ‘Deuhroeistijn‘ wordt zelfs bestempeld als beste Zjiwse liedtekst van 2012. Een lied over flats van beton – een hertaling van de Eagles’ klassieker ‘Hotel California’. Fraai zijn de bonustracks ‘Schoondijkse Blues’ en Cadzandse Blues‘ – twee liedjes die hij opnam begin jaren ’80 en die toendertijd verschenen als single. De Vuyst is geen groot zanger maar wel een groot muzikaal verteller die het publiek moeiteloos aan zich bint en met ‘Oondert’ nog gemakkelijk jaren vooruit kan!

Ries de Vuyst is a guitarist and (blues) singer from the South-East Netherlands. This year (2015) he became sixty. Together with his left-handed guitar, which was special built for him 40 years ago, they are ‘Oondert‘ (One Hundred years). A nice number and reason for celebration. He twice won the contest ‘Sing in Zeeland dialect!’ contest in 2010 and 2012 and in between he released  his debut CD ‘Killing the Blues’ in 2011.

For years Ries de Vuyst played guitar in a few (blues) bands, but it will take until 2011 before he recorded his first album. His style is on the edge of (rhythm &) blues, folk, country and Hot Club de France. A lovely atmosphere, sober instrumentation and sometimes a little dreamy. De Vuyst was born in Breskens, lives nowadays in Ghent (Belgium) and sings in the Zeeland dialect: easy to follow because the lyrics are printed in the enclosed booklet. He writes his own songs, accompanying himself on guitar and is assisted by eight guest musicians. Notable are the howling harmonica Gait Klein Kromhog and gypsy swing guitarist Vincent Chambon. Ries de Vuyst sings about sadness, fairy tales and family. His song ‘Deuhroeistijn‘ is even labeled as the best Zjiwse (dialect) lyric of 2012. A song about concrete building – a re-translation of the Eagles’ classic ‘Hotel California’. Beautiful are the bonus tracks ‘Schoondijkse Blues’ and ‘Cadzandse Blues‘ – two songs which he recorded in the early 80s and appeared in a single in those days. De Vuyst is not a fabulous singer but he’s a great musical storyteller who easily please the audience and effortlessly sing his songs another ‘Oondert’ (100) years!
