De samenwerking tussen het Barok-ensemble XVIII-21 Baroque Nomade en Ethiopische musici resulteert in het album ‘Melothesia Ethiopica’. Een mystiek en magische cohesie tussen 17de eeuwse en Ethiopische muziek. Beiden hebben heel eigen klankkleuren en stijlkenmerken die (onverwacht) bijzonder goed bij elkaar blijken te passen.

In het verleden kwamen al vaker bijzondere releases op de markt waarbij westerse klassieke muziek werd gemengd met Afrikaanse. Zoals de CD ‘Bach to Africa’ van de groep Lambaréné van zanger/gitarist Pierre Akendengue uit Gabon (West-Afrika). Het ensemble XVIII-21  Baroque Nomade werd opgericht door Franse fluitist Jean-Christophe Frisch (foto). Een musicus die steeds op zoek is naar nieuwe muzikale wegen waarbij hij muziek uit bijvoorbeeld Syrië, Iran, Roemenië, China of India mixt met westerse oude muziek. Met zijn nieuwste project ‘Melothesia Ethiopica’ werkte hij samen met musici uit Ethiopië; live opgenomen in Parijs. Klassieke Ethiopische muziek in een Barokke combinatie. De Portugezen brachten in de 16de eeuw enkele westerse muziekinstrumenten en het Christendom naar Ethiopië. Ondanks deze westerse invloed heeft de Ethiopische muziek zich ontwikkelt tot een van de meest herkenbare uit Afrika. Daarom is een mix van Barok muziek met Ethiopische muziek een gedurfde uitdaging. Dat levert soms een verbluffende combinatie op, die opzwepend is en je de Afrikaanse hitte voelt zinderen zoals in ‘Goraué’ of ‘Derbabba’, met de zo herkenbare Ethiopische pentatoniek; de kern van de muziek. Bijzonder is ook ‘Les Folies’, gebaseerd op ‘La Follia’. Een prachtig eeuwenoud thema dat door veel componisten in allerlei variaties is gebruikt. Het klassiek klavecimbel, de viola da gamba, theorbe en gitaar klinken fraai tegen de Ethiopische kebero (monochord) en masinqo (percussie) en vormen een transparante speelsheid die vooral in ‘La Follia’ mooi tot uiting komt. Gizachew Goshu heeft een wendbare stem, zingt speels en met volle overgave naast de Franse sopraan Cyrille Gerstenhaber die met net iets teveel vibrato té theatraal overkomt. Melothesia Ethiopica/XVIII-21 Baroque Nomade is een avontuurlijk album waar diverse instrumenten in nieuwe samenstelling fris en verhelderend klinken. Waar stijlen fraai combineren, musici prachtige (deels geïmproviseerde) muziek creëren en waaruit maar weer eens blijkt hoe universeel muziek is!

The album ‘Melothesia Ethiopica’ is a collaboration between the Baroque ensemble XVIII-21 Baroque Nomade and a few Ethiopian musicians. It’s a mystical and magical cohesion between 17th century and Ethiopian music. Both music have their very own style and features which fits (unexpectedly) very well together.

In the past, many times excellent CDs were released with Western classical music in a mix with African music. Such as ‘Bach to Africa‘ by Lambaréné. A group of singer / guitarist Pierre Akendengue from Gabon (West Africa). The ensemble XVIII-21 Baroque Nomade was created by French flutist Jean-Christophe Frisch. A musician who is always looking for new musical adventurous with music from countrys like Syria, Iran, Romania, China or India to mix it with western Baroque music. With his latest project ‘Melothesia Ethiopica’ he worked with musicians from Ethiopia; live recorded in Paris. Ethiopian classical music in a baroque combination. In the 16th century the Portuguese brought some western music instruments and Christianity to Ethiopia. Despite of these Western influences Ethiopian music has developed into one of the most recognizable music styles from Africa. Therefore, a mix of Baroque music with Ethiopian music a wonderful challenge. Sometimes this combination is stunning, exciting and you feel the scorching African heat as in ‘Goraué’ or ‘Derbabba‘, with the easy recognizable Ethiopian pentatonic; the heart of the music. Another special feature is ‘Les Folies‘, based on ‘La Follia‘. A beautiful ancient theme that has been used by many composers in lots of variations. The classical harpsichord, viola da gamba, theorbo and guitar sound great with the Ethiopian kebero (monochord) and masinqo (percussion) and create transparent and joyfull music, the best reflected in ‘La Follia‘. Gizachew Goshu has a versatile voice, sings playfully, with full dedication alongside the talented French soprano Cyrille Gerstenhaber who’s a little too theatrical (with too much vibrato). Melothesia Ethiopica / XVIII-21 Baroque Nomade is an adventurous album where various instruments sound fresh and enlightening in mostly traditional (partly improvised) compositions. Music styles are beautifuly combined in a lovely creation which shows once again how universal music can be!
