‘Danger Zone’ heet de nieuwe CD van gitarist en zanger Thomas Mapfumo: ‘De Leeuw van Zimbabwe‘. Sinds begin jaren ’70 schrijft en speelt hij zijn eigen muziek met zijn band The Blacks Unlimited. Muziek die gebaseerd is op de door hem ontwikkelde chimurenga. Een opzwepende muziekstijl waar hij naast stevige sounds & beats ook de traditionele mbira (duimpiano) aan toevoegt.

Met zijn lange dreadlocks is Thomas Mapfumo een markante verschijning. Hij speelt in de jaren ’60 Westerse covers in de toenmalige Engelse kolonie Rhodesië, maar schrijft daarnaast ook zijn eigen muziek. Hij richt in 1978 zijn band The Blacks Unlimited op en bedenkt en ontwikkelt de chimurenga. Een nieuwe muziekstijl met opzwepende drums (snelle hi-hat ritmes) en voegt daar het nationale instrument de mbira (duimpiano) aan toe. Deze combinatie is uniek en levert hem nationale bekendheid op; zeker als hij ook nog de twinkelende mbira-patronen imiteert op zijn gitaar. Mapfumo wordt een ster en krijgt al snel de bijnaam ‘De Leeuw van Zimbabwe’. Niet onterecht, want met zijn muziek is hij loyaal aan de bevolking die geleerd heeft neer te kijken op hun eigen cultuur. Thomas Mapfumo eert zijn cultuur: zingt in het Shona, speelt de chimurenga en gebruikt de mbira. Bovendien zingt hij over (politieke) misstanden en wordt zo de spreekbuis van de Zimbabwaanse bevolking.

Ook op zijn nieuwe CD ‘Danger Zone‘ is de chimurenga volop vertegenwoordigd; al horen we ook pop en reggae. Thomas Mapfumo zingt in het Shona en het Engels over liefde, de kracht van (Afrikaanse) muziek tijdens (dans)feesten, de zinloosheid van de (Zimbabwaanse) politiek, oorlogen in Syrië, Irak, Afghanistan en Libië en alcoholverslaving. Al tijden worden zijn maatschappijkritische teksten hem door het Zimbabwaanse regime niet in dank afgenomen en dat is de reden waarom hij tegenwoordig in Oregon (V.S.) woont. Opvallend zijn de aanstekelijke melodieën, pakkender dan op zijn voorgaande albums. Zijn muziek is, ondanks de soms zware onderwerpen, nergens melancholiek. ‘Hatidi Politics’, ‘Zimbabwe’ en ‘Pasi Idandaro’ vormen de kern van dit album en raken het hart van chimurenga. De sonore en herkenbare stem van Mapfumo blijft (zelfs met computerbewerking) het boegbeeld van The Blacks Unlimited. ‘Danger Zone’ is een prachtig album en steekt met sprankelende gitaarpartijen, mbira, blazers en achtergrondzang ver boven de gemiddelde Afrikaanse muziek uit.

‘Danger Zone’ is the name of the new CD by guitarist and singer Thomas Mapfumo: ‘The Lion of Zimbabwe‘. Since the early 70s he writes and plays his own music together with his band The Blacks Unlimited. Music that is based on chimurenga. A rousing musical style invented by Mapfumo where he adds sounds and beats to the traditional mbira (thumb piano).

With his long dreadlocks Thomas Mapfumo is a striking personality. In the 60 he played western covers but also composed his own music. In 1978 he started the band The Blacks Unlimited and invented and developed the chimurenga. A new musical style with quick hi-hat rhythms in combination with the national instrument the mbira (thumb piano). This combination is unique and made him a national star; especially when he imitated the twinkling mbira patterns on his guitar. He got the nickname ‘The Lion of Zimbabwe’. Mapfumo is loyal to the people of Zimbabwe who had learned not to love their own culture. Thomas Mapfumo honors his culture: he sings in Shona, plays the chimurenga and uses the mbira. Moreover, he sings about (political) abuses and has become the voice of the Zimbabwean people.

Also on his new album ‘Danger Zone’ the chimurenga fully represented; but we also hear pop and reggae. Thomas Mapfumo sings in Shona and in English about love, the power of (African) music during (dance) parties, the absurdity of the (Zimbabwean) politics, the wars in Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan and Libya and he sings about alcohol abuse. His critical lyrics were not appreciated by the Zimbabwean regime and that’s why he lives in Oregon (USA) now. Exciting are the melodies, catchier than on his previous albums. His music is uplifting and always sparkling: although he sings about tough subjects. Songs like ‘Hatidi Politics’, ‘Zimbabwe’ or ‘Pasi Idandaro‘ are the heart of this album and are wonderful. Mapfumo has a sonorous and recognizable voice and even with computer enhancement he’s the figurehead of The Blacks Unlimited. ‘Danger Zone’ is wonderful record with sparkling guitars, mbira, horns and backing vocals with songs that shine far beyond the average African music.
