Reizen is van alle tijden waar de poëet, schilder of musicus wordt geïnspireerd door indrukken onderweg. De Marokkaanse ontdekkingsreiziger Ibn Battuta (1304-1369) maakte in 1325 een reis naar Mekka. Islamitische muziek die te horen was in die tijd tussen Marokko en Afghanistan wordt gespeeld door Hesperion XXI o.l.v. Jordi Savall.

De Catalaanse musicus en gamba-speler Jordi Savall is een muzikaal ontdekkingsreiziger, altijd op zoek naar oude muziek uit de Middeleeuwen, Renaissance en de Barok. Hij verzamelt muziek rond één onderwerp en brengt deze uit op thema-CD’s zoals zijn nieuwe album ‘Ibn Battuta – The Traveller of Islam’. Een project rond de Marokkaanse ontdekkingsreiziger Ibn Battuta die in 1325 een reis maakte van Tanger (Marokko) naar Mekka. We horen Middeleeuws Islamitische en Christelijke muziek die schittert in zijn eigen soberheid. Veelal religieuze muziek, gespeeld op ûd (Arabische luit), kanun (citer), kamanche (Iraanse knie-viool), duduk (soort Armeense hobo) kaval (Bulgaarse fluit), percussie en zang. Bijzonder is de combinatie van valiha (buis citer uit Madagascar) met ûd en het gebruik van de tabla. Twee instrumenten die van origine nauwelijks in deze muziek te vinden zijn maar wat opmerkelijk goed werkt in deze opzet. De muziek sprankelt met veelal bescheiden instrumentaties en excelleert daarmee in diepgang, vitaliteit en ontroering; met passie uitgevoerd door musici uit Turkije, Syrië, Marokko, Frankrijk, Afghanistan, Spanje en Griekenland i.s.m. het ensemble Hesperion XXI. Deze zijn bijeen gebracht voor zowel studio- als concertopnames die gemaakt werden in november 2014 in de Verenigde Emiraten. Jordi Savall blijft een van de meest innovatieve oude muziek meesters die met ‘Ibn Battuta – The Traveller of Islam’ een echo van het verleden schitterend laat nagalmen.

In the history travelling has always been a good inspiring way for the poet, the painter or the musician. In 1325 the Moroccan explorer Ibn Battuta (1304-1369) made a trip to Mecca. The Islamic music that he could have heard on his way between Morocco and Afghanistan is now played by Hesperion XXI conducted by Jordi Savall on his wonderful new record ‘Ibn Battuta – The Traveller of Islam’.

The Catalan musician and viola da gamba player Jordi Savall is a great musical explorer, always looking for ancient music from the Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque periods. He collects music around one topic and brings them together on themed CDs like his new album ‘Ibn Battuta – The Traveller of Islam‘. A project on the Moroccan explorer Ibn Battuta who made a trip in 1325 from Tangier (Morocco) to Mecca. We hear medieval Islamic and Christian music. Crystal clear sober music. Mostly religious music played on ûd (Arabian lute), kanun (zither), kamanche (Iranian knee violin), duduk (Armenian oboe type), kaval (Bulgarian flute), percussion and vocals. Exciting are the use of the valiha (tube zither from Madagascar) and the tabla. Two instruments which are original hard to find in this kind of music. The music sparkles with mostly modest instrumentation and thereby excels in depth, vitality and passion; wonderful performed by musicians from Turkey, Syria, Morocco, France, Afghanistan, Spain and Greece together with the ensemble Hesperion XXI. They are brought together for both studio and concert recordings that were made in the United Arab Emirates, November 2014. Jordi Savall is one of the most innovative music masters of early music who turns ‘Ibn Battuta – The Traveller or Islam’ into a splendid echo of the past.
