Er zijn maar weinig groepen die zo gevarieerd zijn als het Senegalese gezelschap Dieuf-Dieul de Thiès. Met opzwepende percussie, funky (fuzz) gitaren, blazers-sectie en zang creëert de groep een eigen (psychedelische) sound die beweegt tussen Mbalax, Afro-Cubaans en Afro-Jazz ballads. In 2013 verscheen hun re-release ‘Vol 1‘, in 2015 is ‘Aw Sa Yone Vol. 2’ her-uitgebracht.

De band Dieuf-Dieul de Thiès werd opgericht in 1979 in Thiès, West Senegal. Alhoewel de groep maar vier jaar actief is geweest, heeft Dieuf-Dieul, mede door de optredens in Dakar en de clubs Gorom, Gandiol, een groot publiek bereikt. Opnames uit die tijd zijn nu opnieuw uitgebracht op twee CD’s; ‘Vol. 1‘ (2013) en het in oktober 2015 verschenen ‘Aw Sa Yone Vol. 2‘. Een enerverende collectie van een ‘bijna vergeten’ groep. In de begeleiding horen we funky gitaar-riffs aangevuld met effecten zoals vervorming, wah-wah en tremolo. Prikkelende percussie en ferme (soms onzuivere) blaaspartijen zorgen voor een bezwerende, bijna onderhuidse klank. De aanhoudende en herhalende ritmes werken hypnotiserend. In deze heerlijke muziek voel je de warmte, ruik je het zweet en verdrink je in een oase van dansende Mbalax, Afro-Cubaanse en Afro-Jazz ritmiek. Mooi is de stem van griot Gora Mbaye die schittert in ‘Am Sa Waye‘, zeker in de hoogte. Alhoewel de begeleidingsband nauwelijks van bezetting veranderd (o.a Pape Seck op gitaar, bassist Ibou Diallo, drummer Cheikh Ndiaye en percussionist El Hadji Ngom) zijn de zangers wel steeds wisselend. Naast Mbaye horen we de toen nog jonge zanger Bissouri Sarr en in het Afro-Cubaanse lied ‘Rumba Para Parajeras’ klinkt de warme stem van Assana Camara. Na 32 jaar is Dieuf-Dieul de Thiès weer bij elkaar en maakt een nieuwe start met het uitbrengen van ‘Vol. 1’ en ‘Aw Sa Yone Vol. 2’ en is de groep klaar om de wereld te veroveren!

Dieuf-Dieul de Thiès is a varied band from Senegal. With rousing percussion, funky (fuzz) guitars, brass section and vocals, the group creates its own (psychedelic) sound on the edge of Mbalax, Afro-Cuban and Afro-jazz ballads. in 2013 they released their re-release ‘Vol 1‘ and in october 2015, their second re-release ‘Aw Sa Yone Vol. 2‘ arrived.

In 1979 the band Dieuf-Dieul the Thiès was founded in Thiès, West Senegal. Although the band was only active for four years, the group had a lot of fans and great performances in Dakar and the clubs Gorom, Gandiol. The music from that period we hear on the re-release ‘Aw Sa Yone Vol. 2’; an exciting collection of this ‘almost forgotten band‘. With fine funky guitar riffs (with distortion, wah-wah and tremolo), bright percussion and a tight brass-section they create a psychedelic atmosphere. The repetitive rhythms makes the music hypnotic. In this music you feel the heat, smell the sweat and you’re almost drown in an oasis of dancing Mbalax, Afro-Cuban and Afro-Jazz rhythms. Beautiful is the voice of griot Gora Mbaye, wonderful in the song ‘Am Sa Waye‘, especially in high notes. Although the backing band barely change their instrumentation (eg Pape Seck on guitar, bassist Ibou Diallo, drummer and percussionists Cheikh Ndiaye and El Hadji Ngom) the singers are varied. Besides Mbaye we hear the young singer Bissouri Sarr and in the Afro-Cuban song ‘Rumba Para Para Jeras‘ the warm voice of Assana Camara. After 32 years Dieuf-Dieul de Thiès is back and playing together again. They made a new start with the releases ‘Vol. 1‘ and ‘Aw Sa Yone Vol. 2‘ and ready for a brand new start to conquer the world!
