Pianist Danilo Pérez, bassist John Patitucci en drummer Brian Blade vormen al jarenlang het begeleidingstrio van saxofonist Wayne Shorter. Nu komen ze zelf met een album onder naam ‘Children of the Light‘. Drie jazzgiganten, een supertrio dat de perfecte mix speelt van moderne jazz met latin invloeden. Drie topmusici met een heel eigen jazzidioom!

Zelden muziek gehoord die zo hecht in elkaar zit als het ‘Children of the Light‘ trio van Pérez, Patitucci en Blade. Een schilderachtig jazzpalet waarbij verschillende jazzstromingen samenkomen. Zo horen we in het openingsstuk een assimilatie van het hoekige van Thelonious Monk, de latin souplesse van Michel Camilo, een vleugje impressionisme met een ostinate piano-linkerhand in het slot. Een werkwijze die verder wordt uitgediept, aangevuld met jazzrock elementen (Lumen). Pérez speelt naast akoestisch ook elektrisch piano net zoals bassist Patitiucci die naast contrabas ook elektrisch speelt. Fraai is de ballade ‘Within Everything‘ waar het trio een ferme muzikale draai maakt en een gevoelige (Gospel) melodie speelt met anthem-achtige baslijn. Bijzonder is ook ‘Ballad for a Noble Man‘. Een door John Patitucci geschreven hommage aan bassist Doug Sommer die begin 2014 overleed, met zijn vrouw Sachi op cello. Met het stuk ‘Luz del Alma‘ blikt Pérez in een breekbare solistische mijmering terug naar Panama om af te sluiten met ‘African Wave’. Een collectief solistisch stuk, met een kort (verborgen) en een Afrikaanse touch. Het trio ‘Children of the Light‘ laat prachtig innovatieve improvisaties horen en creëert daarmee een nieuwe episode binnen de jazzmuziek.

Pianist Danilo Pérez (midden) krijgt de muziek vanaf zijn derde jaar werkelijk met de paplepel ingegoten. Gaat op zijn tiende naar het Conservatorium en is eind jaren ’80 een aantal jaren pianist in Dizzy Gillespie’s United Nation Orchestra waarmee hij vier albums opneemt. John Patitucci (rechts), die per ‘toeval’ de jazz ontdekt, werkt veel met pianist Chick Corea (Elektric – en Akoustic Band) en ontwikkelt zich tot een bassist die melodisch aansluit bij gitarist Wes Montgomery en zo steady is als Ron Carter. Drummer Brian Blade is een kleurrijk musicus die (subtiele) polyritmiek creëert vol inventieve ghost-notes. Hij werkte o.a. met Kenny Garrett en Joshua Redman.

For years pianist Danilo Perez, bassist John Patitucci and drummer Brian Blade played with saxophonist Wayne Shorter. Now they started their own band Children of the Light. Three jazz giants, a super trio playing a perfect blend of modern jazz with Latin influences. Three musicians with an unique jazz idiom!

Rarely heard music which is played so tight and compact like the Children of the Light Trio by Perez, Patitucci and Blade. An exciting jazz palette that bring various types of jazz. In the opening piece there’s an assimilation of the angular Thelonious Monk, the Latin flavour of Michel Camilo, a touch of impressionism with an ostinato left hand at the piano in the end. A process which is further developed, added with jazz rock influences (Lumen). Pérez plays acoustic and electric piano as well as bassist Patitiucci, who plays electric and double bass. Beautiful is the ballad ‘Everything Within‘ where the trio makes a firm musical twist and plays a sensitive (Gospel) melody with an anthem-like bass line. Another special feature is ‘Ballad for a Noble Man‘. One by John Patitucci written tribute to bassist Doug Sommer who died early 2014, with his wife Sachi on cello. With the piece ‘Luz del Alma‘ Perez plays a fragile solo reverie thinking about Panama to finish the album with ‘African Wave‘. A collective rhythmic solo piece, with a short (hidden) theme with an African flavour. The trio ‘Children of the Light‘ are excellent musicians, who play wonderful improvisations and create a new episode of innovative jazz.
