‘African Harmonies – Siyabonga‘ (We Thank You) is de derde CD van het a-capella trio Insingizi uit Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. De groep viel al op met hun wereldwijd uitgebrachte debuut-cd ‘Voices of Southern Africa’ uit 2006 en is sindsdien, tegen een achtergrond van geloof, hoop en vertrouwen, alleen maar beter geworden.

Het trio Insingizi startte tijdens de middelbare schooltijd in 1987 in Bulawayo, Zuid Zimbabwe. De drie zangers Vusa Mkhaya Ndlovu, Dumisani Ramadu Moyo en Blessings Nqo Nkomo richten zich vooral op de traditionele muziek uit Zimbabwe maar werken ook mee aan ‘wereld’-projecten waaronder Mozuluart met de Australische pianist Roland Guggenbichler. Bovendien zijn ze regelmatig in Nederland voor concerten met de gitarist Hans Theesink.

De vocalen van Insingizi klinken rijk en breed, zeker als je bedenkt dat het maar drie stemmen zijn. Deze zijn zo geharmoniseerd dat ze dicht bij elkaar liggen in ‘close harmonie‘, strak in ritme met voor- en nazang en vloeien als één warme gloed uit je speakers. De groep zingt in het Engels en de Zimbabwaanse taal IsiNdebele over het cultureel Afrikaans erfgoed; de dansen en muziek, over religie, vriendschap, ziekte en echtscheiding. De meeste stukken worden a capella gezongen maar soms begeleiden zichzelf met body-percussie zoals handklap en mondpercussie (Laduma) live aangevuld met de ‘gumboot dance‘. Een Afrikaanse dans die gepaard gaat met voet- en klapwerk op laarzen met belletjes rond de enkels. De rust en sereniteit van hun muziek is een verademing. De stemmen zijn fluweelzacht met een licht hees randje waardoor ze zich moeiteloos in elkaar vleien. Coherent en doortimmerd maar toch zo laconiek en vanzelfsprekend alsof het allemaal vanzelf gaat. Niet zo vreemd dat de groep in 2010 al de ‘Prix France Musique du Monde 2010’ (Radio France World Music Award) in ontvangst mocht nemen. Insingizi draagt ‘Siyabonga‘ (We Thank You) op aan alle vrienden en fans die de groep al jarenlang steunen. Een prachtig eerbetoon aan het publiek dat op wederzijds vertrouwen kan rekenen.

‘African Harmonies – Siyabonga’ (We Thank You) is the third CD of the a capella trio Insingizi from Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. The group was already spotted when they released their debut album ‘Voices of Southern Africa’ in 2006 and since then they even become better.

In 1987 the trio Insingizi started during high school in Bulawayo, southern Zimbabwe. The three singers Vusa Mkhaya Ndlovu, Dumisani Ramadu Moyo and Blessings Nqo Nkomo focused on traditional music from Zimbabwe but also work on ‘world’ projects, like Mozuluart with Australian pianist Roland Guggenbichler. Moreover, they recorded albums with the Dutch guitarist Hans Theessink.

The vocals of Insingizi sound rich and broad, especially when you consider there are only three members. Their songs are wonderful harmonized in ‘close harmony’, tight in rhythm with call and response singing. The warm melodies flow from your speakers. Insingizi sings in English and the Zimbabwean language IsiNdebele about the African cultural heritage; about dancing and music, about religion, friendship, illness and divorce. Most of the pieces are sung a capella, but sometimes they accompany themselves with body percussion such as handclapping and mouth (Laduma), and live complemented by the ‘gumboot dance‘. An African foot and clapping dance on boots with bells around the ankles. The peace and quietness in their music is a relief. The voices are velvety with a slightly hoarse edge, that makes them sound like unity. Their music sounds so easy, so coherent and very well-done. Not surprisingly, in 2010 the group already won the ‘Prix France Musique du Monde 2010‘ (Radio France World Music Award). Insingizi dedicates ‘Siyabonga‘ (We Thank You) to all their friends and fans who support the group for years. A beautiful tribute to the audience; the basis of mutual trust.
