De Nederlandse gitarist Marnix Busstra werd dit jaar 50. Reden voor een nieuwe CD ‘Firm Fragile Fun’ en een overzichts-dubbel-album ‘Best of Both Worlds’ van deze veelzijdige snarenspeler. Busstra speelt al jaren een deuk in de Nederlandse jazz-boter met zijn vele bands zoals Second Vision, Marnix Busstra4-tet, Buzz Bros Band, Marnix Busstra Band en de begeleidingsband van zijn vrouw Karin Bloemen.

‘Firm Fragile Fun’ of wel ‘Stevig Breekbaar Lol’. Een titel die de lading dekt. De muziek is energiek, dynamisch en zit vol muzikaal plezier. Gitaar-thema’s, met verrukkelijk John Scofield/Philip Catherine sound, zwieren door je kamer. Heldere composities geschreven door Busstra, met een duidelijke structuur en veel ruimte voor zijn mede musici. Opvallend daarbij is het drumwerk van Pieter Bast die met suggestie en polyritmiek een zeer stuwende factor is en die samen met contrabassist Arnold Dooyeweerd (mooie laid-back solo in het bluesy ‘Smoky‘) een voortreffelijk tandem vormt. De lyrische pianist Rembrandt Frerichs soleert prachtig melodisch, met een cimbaal imitatie in het openingsstuk ‘Stress’ en ‘Crazy’, met hier en daar een piano-knipoog naar de groten zoals Jarrett (‘Joy‘) en Monk (‘Fun‘). Marnix Busstra is een inspirerend, helder en trefzeker musicus die naast gitaar ook bouzouki en elektrische sitar speelt (verstild in het sferische ‘Deep‘). Op zijn nieuwe album ‘Firm Fragile Fun’ heeft elke compositie een korte titel die een gemoedstoestand uitdrukt zoals Gone, Deep of Mild. Daarin vertelt hij muzikaal kort en bondig wat hij zeggen wil, zonder veel omhaal en mooidoenerij. Dat maakt Busstra een bijzonder muzikant die de kern raakt waardoor de muziek voor zich spreekt.

Ter gelegenheid van zijn 50ste verjaardag is het album ‘Best of Both Worlds’ uitgebracht. Een compilatie dubbel-CD met werk van Busstra van de laatste 20 jaar, met o.a. zijn bands Second Vision, Buzz Bros Band en Mike Maineiri/MB Quartet, als ook zijn werk met de zangeressen Diane Reeves, Simone Roerade en zijn vrouw Karin Bloemen. Een fraai overzicht waaruit blijkt wat voor een veelzijdig musicus en componist hij is.

This year the Dutch guitarist Marnix Busstra celebrated his 50th anniversary. Reason for a new CD ‘Firm Fragile Fun‘ and a compilation-double-album ‘Best of Both Worlds‘ of this versatile guitar player. Busstra has played in many bands like Second Vision, Marnix Busstra4-tet, Buzz Bros Band, Marnix Busstra Band and the band of his wife Karin Bloemen.

‘Firm Fragile Fun‘ is a title that makes sense. The music is energetic, dynamic and full of musical fun. Guitar themes, with a wonderful John Scofield / Philip Catherine sound, whirl through your speakers. Clear compositions written by Busstra, with a fresh structure and lots of space for his fellow musicians. Striking is drummer Pieter Bast’s polyrhythms and ghost-notes playing. A very propulsive part of the music. Together with bassist Arnold Dooyeweerd (lovely laid-back bluesy solo in the ‘Smoky‘) they are an excellent tandem. Pianist Rembrandt Frerichs solos are beautifully melodic, with a cymbalon imitation in the opening piece ‘Stress’ and ‘Crazy’, with here and there the piano style of Jarrett (‘Joy‘) and Monk (‘Fun’). Marnix Busstra is an inspiring, clear and precise musician who plays besides guitar also  bouzouki and electric sitar in the spherical ‘Deep‘. On his new album ‘Fragile Firm Fun‘ he tells a musical story. Every composition has a short title that implifies a mood or feeling, as in the titles ‘Gone’, ‘Deep’ or ‘Mild‘. That makes Busstra a special musician who touches the sense and the heart of the music and let it speak for itselves.

To celebrate his 50th anniversary, the album ‘Best of Both Worlds‘ was also released. A compilation double CD with works written by Busstra over the last 20 years. Both as a jazz musician with bands like Second Vision, Buzz Bros Band and Mike Maineiri/Marnix Busstra Quartet, as well as his work with the singers Diane Reeves, Simone Roerade and his wife Karin Bloemen. An excellent overview which shows what a wonderful musician and a fine composer he is.
