Was het vorige album ‘Albala’ (2012) van de Malinese gitarist Samba Touré nog een muzikaal statement tegen de sharia en de politieke crisis, vooral in het noorden van zijn land. Op zijn nieuwe album ‘Gandadiko‘ (Brandend Land) keert hij terug naar zijn roots. Een gevarieerde CD die meer gebaseerd is op ‘hoop‘, met een variëteit aan ritmes en sferen.

Als Samba Touré in 1968 wordt geboren is zijn vader inmiddels overleden. Hij groeit op met zijn broer Ibrahima (‘Bouri’) en zijn moeder. Via haar, zij is zangeres in de band van de legendarische gitarist Ali Farka Toure, leert Samba de Malinese muziek kennen. Samen met zijn broer richt hij in de hoofdstad Bamako de band Farafina Lolo (Afrikaanse Ster) op. In die tijd verdiept hij zich ook in de muziek van Ali Farka, die inmiddels een ster is geworden met zijn Desert Blues. In 1997 vraagt deze hem te komen spelen in zijn band en tourt hij door Amerika en Europa. Eenmaal terug in Mali neemt hij in 1998 zijn debuut solo-CD ‘Fondo’ op. Er volgen nog enkele albums met in 2008 het album ‘Songhaï’. Een hommage aan Ali Farka Touré die inmiddels in 2006 was overleden.

De nieuwe CD ‘Gandadiko‘ van Samba Touré is een muzikale omschrijving over het gevaar in zijn land. Waar het vee vel over been is, jongeren ‘verdrinken’ in de alcohol en de hele dag stoned zijn en waar het land langzaam uitgeput raakt en wordt ‘beledigd‘ door de bewoners. Touré zingt er openhartig over. Hij is een bevlogen muzikant die (elektrisch) gitaar speelt en garant staat voor oprechte muziek. Hij schreef alle stukken en zingt in het Songhaï ondersteund door strakke percussie-partijen, tweede gitaar, de opvallende njurkel (één-snarige viool), bas en achtergrondzang. Uitschieters zijn het openingslied ‘Gandadiko‘ waar je de broeierig zon op je schouders voelt branden. Het Touareg georiënteerde ‘Touri Idjé Bibi’, de groovy ballade ‘Chin Hari’ met zijn eindeloos mooie melodie. Bijzonder is het verhaal achter ‘Gafouré‘ behorende tot de ‘Djinn’ (religieuze muziek). Een lied dat volgens Touré heeft bijgedragen aan de dood van ‘Su Wililé‘, die na de opname overleed. Het album ‘Gandadiko‘ is een ode aan zijn vaderland dat hij met zijn landgenoten verder wil opbouwen. Daarover zingt hij in het slotlied ‘Woyé Katé’ met de Tuareg zanger Ahmed Ag Kaedi: ‘….we moeten alles samen herbouwen. We moeten ons land en onze huizen herstellen en niemand meer voor ons laten spreken’. En zo is het!

The previous album ‘Albala‘ (2012) of the Malian guitarist Samba Touré, was a musical statement against Sharia law and the political crisis; especially in the north of his country. On his new album ‘Gandadiko’ (Burning Land), he returns back to his roots. A varied CD, based on ‘hope‘, with a variety of rhythms and atmospheres.

In 1968 Samba Touré was born. He grew up with his brother Ibrahima (Bouri) and his mother. Through her, she was a singer in the band of the legendary guitarist Ali Farka Toure, Samba learned about Malian music. When Samba lived in Bamako he started the band Farafina Lolo (African Star) with his brother. During that time he also listend to the music of Ali Farka, who was already a star with his Desert Blues. In 1997 Ali Farka asked him to join his band and they toured through America and Europe. Back in Mali Samba Touré recorded his debut solo album ‘Fondo‘ in 1998. After a few other albums he released ‘Songhai‘ in 2008. A tribute to Ali Farka Toure, who died in 2006.

Samba Touré’s new CD ‘Gandadiko‘ is a musical voyage of the danger in his country. Where cows are only skins and bones, young people drink to much alcohol and being stoned all the time and where the country has to be reconstructed. Touré is a honest and passionate musician; a guarantee for sincere music. He play the guitar, wrote all the pieces and sings in the Songhai language supported by tight percussion, a second guitar, striking njurkel (one-stringed fiddle), bass and backing vocals. Highlights are the opening song ‘Gandadiko‘ in which you feel the burning African sun on your shoulders. The Touareg oriented melody ‘Touri Idjé Bibi‘, the groovy ballad ‘Chin Hari’ with its endless beautiful melody. Special is the story behind ‘Gafouré‘. A song in the ‘Jinn’ (religious music) tradition, dedicated to ‘Su Wililé‘, who died after the recording. The album ‘Gandadiko‘ is a tribute to his homeland Mali, which he wants to rebuild with his countrymen. He sings about it in the last song ‘Woyé Kate’ with the Tuareg singer Ahmed Ag Kaedi: ‘….we shall reconstruct, all together. We shall reconstruct the country and won’t let anyone speak for us again’. And so it is!
