Wat is er leuker dan één accordeon: inderdaad vier accordeons. En die zijn nu te vinden op de CD ‘Jazz at Berlin Philhamonic IV – Accordion Night’. De vier wereld-accordeonisten Vincent Peirani, Stian Carstensen, Régis Gizavo en Klaus Paier spelen elk een solo-stuk (met gastmusicus). ‘Libertango‘ (Piazzolla) is het slotstuk dat ze samen ten gehore brengen.

De vier accordeonisten op het album ‘Jazz at Berlin Philhamonic IV – Accordion Night’ zijn allen een meester op hun instrument: maar ieder op zijn eigen manier. De CD opent met de klassiek geschoolde Oostenrijkse accordeonist Klaus Paier die met ‘Tango Loco‘ (met celliste Asja Valcic) de toon zet voor de hele CD. Een prachtige compositie die zowel de accordeon als de cello laat schitteren aangevuld met een puntige en markante improvisatie. Régis Gizavo kreeg bekendheid bij de Corsicaanse groep I Muvrini. Herkenbaar door zijn soepel spel (alsof er twee spelen) en het meezingen van thema’s, horen we hem hier samen met Nguyén Lê. Een in Parijs wonende gitarist van Vietnamese afkomst die zijn gitaar laat ronken als een dan-bau: één-snarig instrument uit Vietnam met zeer herkenbare klankkleur. Bijzondere combinatie! De Noorse accordeonist Stian Carstensen maakte furore met zijn multi-band Farmers Market. Zijn spel is gelardeerd met Bulgaarse versieringen; zeer goed te horen in het tweede deel van zijn solo-stuk ‘Horgalaten‘. Tijdens deze ‘Accordion Night’ speelt hij samen met violist Adam Baldych het folky ‘Oriental Hoedown‘, met een voortreffelijk stukje Indiase tabla-immitatie, met veel sprankelende improvisatie waar beide musici elkaar voortreffelijk aanvullen. Dat geldt overigens ook voor de drie stukken die Vincent Peirani speelt met rietblazer Emile Parisien. Deze accordeonist is een nauwgezet musicus. Accuraat, puntig en verzorgd spel waar de lange melodielijnen van Parisien’s sopraansax fraai over mêleren.  ‘Jazz at Berlin Philhamonic IV – Accordion Night’ is een muzikaal accordeon-exposé van vier accordeonisten die je alle kanten van dit bijzondere instrument laten horen; waardoor maar weer eens duidelijk wordt hoe mooi virtuoze tijdloosheid kan schitteren!

What is more fun than óne accordion: yes indeed, four accordions! You can hear them on the new recording ‘Jazz at Berlin Philhamonic IV – Accordion Night‘. Four giant accordionists Vincent Peirani, Stian Carstensen, Régis Gizavo and Klaus Paier play a solo piece with a guest musician. As final piece they all play together Piazzolla’s ‘Libertango’.

The four accordionists on the album ‘Jazz at Berlin Philharmonic IV – Accordion Night’ are all a masters of their instrument: but each in his own style. The CD opens with the classical trained Austrian accordionist Klaus Paier playing ‘Tango Loco‘ (with cellist Asja Valčić). This piece sets the spirit for the entire CD. A beautiful composition with a sparkling accordion and cello by a sharp and striking improvisation. Régis Gizavo became wellknown in the Corsican group I Muvrini. Recognizable by its smooth play (he sounds like two musicians) and singing along with his melodies. He’s assisted by Nguyen Lê. A Paris-based guitarist of Vietnamese origin who makes his guitar sounds like a dan-bau: one-stringed instrument from Vietnam with highly recognizable timbre. Very special combination! Norwegian accordionist Stian Carstensen caused a furore with its multi-band Farmers Market. His accodion play is full of Bulgarian ornaments; very well recognizable in the second part of his solo piece ‘Horgalaten‘. During this ‘Accordion Night’ he plays with violinist Adam Baldych the folky inspired ‘Oriental Hoedown‘ with an excellent part of Indian tabla immitation, with many sparkling improvisation where both music complement each other excellently. That also applies to the three pieces that Vincent Peirani plays with saxophonist Emile Parisien. This accordionist in a meticulous musician. Accurate and tight player whose melodic lines beautiful mix with Parisien’s soprano saxophone. ‘Jazz at Berlin Philhamonic IV – Accordion Night’ is a musical exposé of four accordionists that shows all kinds of music of this particular instrument. A lovely, shining and endless musical trip!
