‘Two Universe‘ is het zesde album van de Amerikaanse band Feufollet. Een kwintet uit Louisiana dat tegen een cajun-achtergrond folk, country, blues en rock ’n roll mixt tot geraffineerd sprankelende muziek. Opborrelend uit de moerassen van Louisiana zingt de groep in het Engels en Frans (Patois) over alledaagse zaken als afscheid, liefde, verdriet en vriendschap.

‘Mensen zijn niet geïnteresseerd in muziek op zich. Ze zijn geïnteresseerd in de atmosfeer die door muziek wordt gecreëerd‘; zei de cajun-accordeonist Marc Savoy. Dat geldt zeker voor de arme Franstalige bewoners uit Louisiana, begin 20ste eeuw, die in de weekenden een ‘laisser les bon temps’ (let the good times roll) instelling hadden. Cajunmuziek, met zijn sfeer bepalende accordeon, paste daar helemaal bij. Deze muziek ontstond eind 19de eeuw in Louisiana. Tot 1920 was de viool het belangrijkste instrument maar werd langzaam overgenomen door de accordeon. Een instrument dat beter bestand was tegen het warme en vochtige klimaat van het Amerikaanse zuiden. Maar daarmee veranderde ook de Cajun muziek en werden de typische viool-glissandi vertaald naar de accordeon. Opzwepende dansmuziek dus, herkenbaar door de accordeon en pentatoniek: 5-toons-toonladder, die we overigens ook tegenkomen in de countrymuziek. Deze muzikale ingrediënten vormen de basis voor de ongedwongen muziek van Feufollet op gitaar, accordeon, viool, bas, drums en keyboard (van nieuw lid Andrew Toups). Zonnige muziek met de prachtige stem van Kelli Jones-Savoy die ook viool speelt, fraaie meerstemmigheid met (lead)zanger / accordeonist Chris Stafford die aangename melodieën zingen. Niet alle composities zijn even origineel maar de ongedwongen mix en de overtuigingskracht van Feufollet maakt ‘Two Universe‘ nu al een van de beste albums van 2015!

‘Two Universe’ is the sixth album by the American band Feufollet. A quintet from Louisiana that mixes folk, country, blues and rock ’n roll into a fine sparkling cajun music. Bubbling from the swamps of Louisiana, the group sings in English and French (Patois) about todays problems like saying goodbye, love, sadness and friendship.

‘People are not interested in the music itself. They are interested in the atmosphere created by music’; said the cajun accordionist Marc Savoy. That certainly applies to the poorer French-speaking people from Louisiana at the beginning of the 20th century. Especially in the weekends they had a ‘laissez les bon temps‘ (let the good times roll) feeling. Cajun music, with its spherical accordion, was that good music. This music was created in the late 19th century in Louisiana. Until 1920 the violin was the main instrument but was gradually taken over by the accordion. An instrument that was more resistant to the hot and humid climate of the American south. But it changed the Cajun music and typical violin glissandi were translated into the accordion. So uplifting dance music, recognizable by the accordion and pentatonic scale: five-tone scale, which we also encounter in country music. These musical ingredients are the basics for the lovely music of Feufollet played on guitar, accordion, violin, bass, drums and keyboards (by new member Andrew Toups). Sunny music with the beautiful voice of Kelli Jones-Savoy who also plays the violin, beautiful harmonies with (lead) vocalist/accordionist Chris Stafford singing fine melodies. Not all the compositions are that original but the natural spirit of the music makes ‘Two Universe’ one of the best albums of 2015!
