Zanger/gitarist en liedjesschrijver BJ Baartmans maakt al jaren CD’s met zijn muzikale kompanen organist Mike Roelofs en drummer Sjoerd van Bommel. Op ‘Later‘ zijn het zelfs de enige musici die hem begeleiden in tien autobiografische songs. Langs de Brabantse horizon schittert het album in muzikale eenvoud tegen een blues, soul, country en rock achtergrond.

Op ‘Later’ keert BJ Baartmans terug naar de essentie, naar de basis van de muziek. Sobere liedjes worden tot in de finesses gearrangeerd tot kristalheldere muziek in een gitaar, orgel & drums bezetting. Het is deze kleine bezetting die ervoor zorgt dat elke noot ertoe doet, waardoor de muziek in diepgang wint. Fraai zijn de tempoverdubbelingen en maatwisselingen met veel aandacht voor klankkleur, sprankelende gitaren met tremolo, galm en andere effecten (vervorming). Het orgel (Hammond B3) werkt als een soort katalysator en geeft de muziek zijn warme vacht, met een aantal prachtige solo’s, zoals die in ‘Zoete Inval‘ waarin het orgel doet denken aan de legendarische Brian Auger. Baartmans zingt autobiografische teksten in het Nederlands met een zeer herkenbare (Brabantse) tongval met hier een daar een tweede stem en zelfs een koortje in ‘Gitaar!’ (met een knipoog naar Neil Young). ‘Later’ is een tijdloze muzikale mijmering die over Brabant een positief licht laat schijnen dat zóver schittert, dat het met gemak heel Nederland bestrijkt. Singer/songwriter and guitarist BJ Baartmans recorded several CDs with organist Mike Roelofs and drummer Sjoerd van Bommel. On his recent album ‘Later’ they even play as a trio (without guest musicians) ten autobiographical songs. The album shines in musical simplicity against a blues, soul, country and rock background on the horizon of Brabant (South of the Netherlands).

BJ Baartmans returns to the essence, to the roots of the music. Sober songs are beautiful arranged to crystal clear music for guitar, organ and drums. It is this small ensemble that makes every note matters, which gives the music more soul. Beautiful are the tempo changes and the use of timbre like the sparkling guitars with tremolo, reverb and other effects (distortion). The organ (Hammond B3) is almost like a catalyst which gives the music its warm fur, with some beautiful solos, as in ‘Zoete Inval‘ in which the organ sounds like the legendary Brian Auger. Baartmans sings autobiographical songs in Dutch with a very recognizable accent from the south (Brabant). Added here and there with a second voice and even a choir in ‘Guitar!‘ (with a link to Neil Young). ‘Later’ is a timeless musical reverie which shines a positive light on Brabant.
