De debuut-cd ‘The Little Battle’ van de Ierse band The Young Folk, released september 2014, sloeg in als een bom. En alhoewel de groep in Nederland relatief onbekend is, werd het april-concert 2015 in Paradiso (Amsterdam) vanwege de enorme belangstelling halsoverkop verplaatst van de bovenzaal naar het hoofdpodium. Niet zo vreemd als je de frisse muziek hoort van dit viertal!

‘The Little Battle‘ is dan wel het debuut van de The Young Folk, maar zo klinkt het niet. Een doorleefd en voortvarend folk-album. Sinds de revival uit de jaren ’60 heeft de folk qua populariteit een generatie overgeslagen en is deze muziek, mede door het enorme succes van singer-song-writers, weer helemaal terug. The Young Folk maakt daar handig gebruik van. Zanger en gitarist Anthony Furey schreef bijna alle stukken. Goed in het gehoor liggende liedjes, met zorg gearrangeerd voor gitaar, viool, mandoline, piano, keyboards, bas en drums. En vooral de prachtige meerstemmige zang is briljant; te horen in het openingslied ‘My Friends‘ en ‘I’ve been here before‘. Natuurlijk zijn er muzikale raakvlakken; horen we kenmerken van bijvoorbeeld Neil Young of Mumfords & Sons. En dat Anthony de zoon is van de legendarische The Fureys, zal zeker ook in zijn voordeel hebben gewerkt. Ook hij is een product van de geschiedenis. Maar met zijn band The Young Folk verwerkt hij deze geschiedenis zo, dat dit dé folksensatie wordt van 2015!

The debut CD ‘The Little Battle’ of the Irish band The Young Folk, released in September 2014, hit like a bomb. And although the group in the Netherlands is relatively unknown, their april concert 2015 at Paradiso (Amsterdam) was moved from the upper room to the main stage because of the huge interest.  Not surprising when you hear the fresh music of this wonderful quartet!

‘The Little Battle’ is the début of The Young Folk, but it does not sound like their first cd. A heartfelt and energetic folk album. Since the folk revival of the ’60s, the folk in popularity beaten over a generation and this music, thanks to the huge success of singer-song-writers, is all the way back. The Young Folk makes it convenient using. Singer and guitarist Anthony Furey wrote almost all the songs. Catchy tunes, carefully arranged for guitar, violin, mandolin, piano, keyboards, bass and drums. And especially the beautiful polyphonic singing is brilliant; like the opening song ‘My Friends‘ and ‘I’ve been here before‘. Of course there are musical interfaces; we hear, for example, features of Neil Young or Mumfords & Sons. And that Anthony is the son of the legendary The Fureys will certainly helped him in the music business. He is also a product of history. But with his band The Young Folk he turns this history into new innovative music which will be thé folk sensation of 2015!
