‘Als muziek goed is, maakt het niet uit op welk instrument je het speelt’ zei mijn leraar vroeger altijd. En gelijk heeft hij, getuige de nieuwe cd van het Arte Duo van saxofoniste Aubrey Snell en pianiste Lineke Lever. Het duo speelt stukken die van origine niet voor (sopraan)sax met pianobegeleiding zijn geschreven maar in deze combinatie bijzonder fraai uit de verf komen.

Het Arte Duo werd in 2001 opgericht door saxofoniste Aubrey Snell en pianiste Lineke Lever, beiden Cum Laude afgestudeerd aan het Conservatorium. Op hun cd ‘Salut d’Amour’ hebben ze gekozen voor werken met een duidelijke liedstructuur van componisten uit de 19de – begin 20ste eeuw. Muziek uit de Romantiek van Rachmaninoff, Schumann, Schubert, Seant-Saëns, Massenet, Fauré maar ook muziek uit de Nationale Scholen waar Grieg (Noorwegen) toe behoort en Elgar (Engeland) een voorloper van was. Componisten die de (volks)muziek uit hun land verwerkten in hun muziek. Al deze componisten schreven stukken van origine gecomponeerd voor viool, cello of zangstem met piano/orkestbegeleiding: door het Arte Duo uitgevoerd op (sopraan)sax en piano. Hun tweede album staat vol bekend werk waarbij sommige stukken al meerdere keren werden bewerkt voor andere bezettingen; zoals het openingslied ‘Vocalise…‘ van Rachmaninof in schitterende uitvoering van het Italiaanse duo Alvarez / Licitra op hun cd ‘Duetto‘. Aubrey Snell en Lineke Lever laten op ‘Salut d’Amour’ een nieuwe kleur horen, een nieuwe muzikale glans die door de ongebruikelijke sax/piano-combinatie voortdurend melancholie verruilt voor euforie. Zij brengen de muziek terug naar de kern waarbij de subtiel gemêleerde sax zich fraai vleit tegen de brede pianoklank. Deze beide musici vullen elkaar prachtig aan en vertolken intens de 19de eeuwse uitvoeringspraktijk. Ik zie uit naar hun vervolg-cd met (wellicht) modern repertoire waarbij dissonantie en bewegingsvrijheid nog meer tot de verbeelding spreekt.

‘If music is composed well, it does not matter on what instrument you play it’, my teacher used to say. And he’s right, witness the new CD by the Arte Duo: saxophonist  Aubrey Snell and pianist Lineke Lever. They play original pieces newly arranged for (soprano) saxophone with piano accompaniment.

Arte Duo was founded in 2001 by saxophonist Aubrey Snell and pianist Lineke Lever, both Cum Laude graduate at the Conservatory. For their CD ‘Salut d’Amour‘ they have chosen compositions with a clear song structure of composers of the 19th – early 20th century. Music from the Romantic Periode written by Rachmaninoff, Schumann, Schubert, Seant-Saëns, Massenet, Fauré as well as music from the National Schools where Grieg (Norway) belong to it and Elgar (England) was a precursor. Composers who the (folk) music from their country processed in their music. All these composers wrote pieces originally composed for violin, cello and voice with piano / orchestral accompaniment carried out by the Arte Duo on (soprano) saxophone and piano. Their second album is full of well-known work. Some pieces arranged for other musician, like the opening song ‘Vocalise ...’ by Rachmaninof in a brilliant performance by the Italian duo Alvarez / Licitra on their CD ‘Duetto‘. Aubrey Snell and Lineke Liver show ‘Salut d’Amour‘ a new color, a new musical brilliance by the unusual sax / piano combination, constantly swapped between melancholy and euphoria. They bring the music back to the essence where the sax subtly and beautifully flatters itself against the broad piano sound. These two musicians complement each other beautifully and intensely interpret the 19th century performance practice. I look forward to their follow-up CD with (perhaps) modern repertoire with dissonance and freedom of movement for even more imagination.
