Eric Bibb is Amerikaans bluesgitarist die sinds de jaren zeventig in de Finse hoofdstad Helsinki woont en sindsdien zo’n veertig albums uitbrengt. Hij valt op door zijn to-the-point gitaarspel waarbij melodie, bas en akkoorden elkaar fraai afwisselen. Hoe hij dat doet, laat hij zien op zijn nieuwe cd/cd-rom/dvd ‘Guitar Tab Songbook Volume-1‘.

Eric Bibb groeit in een muzikale familie. Zijn vader is zanger en TV presentator van de show ‘Something New’ waarin Eric debuteert. Zijn oom is de wereldberoemde pianist John Lewis van het Modern Jazz Quartet. Bovendien komen  bekende zangers als Paul Leroy Robeson en Pete Seeger regelmatig over de vloer. Eric Bibb is een bijzonder blues musicus met een warme en diepe stem die zijn akoestisch gitaarspel heeft ontdaan van alle franje. Hierdoor klinkt het sober en bovendien staat het onafhankelijk van de zang waarbij je tussen de noten de bas- en drums-simulatie hoort (prachtig in ‘In My Father’s House’ met een markante afterbeat). Hij gebruikt korte ritmische quotes die hij herhaalt binnen het blues idioom. Dat maakt zijn spel helder en overzichtelijk en uiterst geschikt om liefhebbers mee te laten genieten van zijn muziek op CD, DVD (vanuit twee punten gefilmd) en CD-rom met partituur, teksten en achtergrondinformatie. Alle liedjes worden op de CD twee keer gespeeld: één keer zonder en één keer met zang. De ‘Guitar Tab Songbook Volume-1‘ is een soort ‘lescombinatie’ voor wie het spel van deze legendarische gitarist wil doorgronden maar het is ook een luister-cd voor wie zich wil laten meevoeren met liedjes als ‘Champaign Habits’, ‘Needed Time‘, ‘On My Way to Bamako’ (refererend aan zijn cd ‘Brothers in Bamako‘ die hij opnam met de Malinese gitarist Habib Koité in 2012) of het prachtig instrumentale ‘Sebastian’s Tune.

Eric Bibb is an American blues guitarist who lives in the Finnish capital Helsinki since the seventies and recorded about forty albums. His to-the-point guitar play is remarkable – bass, chords and melody alternate beautifully. He shows it on his new CD/CD-ROM/DVD ‘Guitar Tab Songbook Volume 1′.

Eric Bibb grew up in a musical family. His father was a singer and the anchor man of the TV show ‘Something New‘ on which Eric débuts. His uncle is the world-renowned pianist John Lewis of the Modern Jazz Quartet. Moreover, well-known singers like Paul Leroy Robeson and Pete Seeger visit the family regularly. Eric Bibb is a special blues musician with a warm and deep voice who plays no-nonsense blues. His guitar sounds sober and moreover, it is autonomic of the singing. Between the notes you can hear the simulation of a bass and drums (wonderful in ‘In My Father’s House’ with a striking after-beat). He uses short rhythmic quotes which he repeats in the blues idiom. That makes his music clear and transparent and extremely suitable for music lovers to enjoy his music on this CD, DVD (filmed from two points) or CD-ROM with score, lyrics and background information. All the songs on the CD are played twice: one without (so only guitar) and the other with vocals. The ‘Guitar Tab Songbook Volume 1’ is a kind lesson, a combination for those who want to understand the music of this legendary guitarist but it is also for those who want to be carried away with songs like ‘Champaign Habits’, ‘Needed Time’, ‘On My Way to Bamako’ referring to his album ‘Brothers in Bamako‘, (which he recorded with the Malian guitarist Habib Koité in 2012) or the beautiful instrumental song ‘Sebastian’s Tune‘.
