De Albanese zangeres Elina Duni groeit zo langzamerhand uit tot een internationale ster die ons de bijzondere muziek uit Albanië laat horen. Op elke cd die ze uitbrengt, zingt ze muziek haar geboorteland Albanië, (en de Balkan) in een jazz-signatuur met piano, bas en drums begeleiding. ‘Dallëndyshe’ (Zwaluw) is haar vierde album.

De muziek van Albanië is ruwweg te verdelen in noord– en zuid Albanees. In het noorden klinken de heroïsche gedichten (Rapsodi Kresniké) van de Ghegs en liederen die lijken op de Bosnische sevdahlinka: met Oriëntaals karakter en veel wisseling van mineur en majeur. In het zuiden van Albanië is het de vocale muziek die overheerst. Meerstemmig, met een drone; één lang-liggende toon en zijn afglijdende melodie aan het einde van een muzikale zin. Voor het meerstemmig zingen hebben de Albaniërs zelfs een gezegde; ‘één is maar alleen, twee hebben strijd en drie zingen’.

Elina Duni (1981) wordt geboren in Albanië, in de hoofdstad Tirana. Na de overgangsperiode in 1992, verhuist Elina met haar moeder naar Genève waar ze klassiek piano studeert, in Bern aangevuld met een zang en compositie-studie aan de Hochschule der Künste. Daar ontdekt ze ook de jazz die ze reflecteert op de muziek uit haar geboorteland. Ze start het Elina Duni Quartet waarmee ze inmiddels vier cd’s opnam en een uitgekristalliseerde vorm heeft gevonden waarin ze (vooral) de rijke Albanese zangcultuur zingt. Op ‘Dallëndyshe’ zingt ze dus liederen uit Albanië maar ook muziek uit Kosovo en een stuk van de Arbëreshë Albaniërs die sinds de 15de eeuw in het zuiden van Italië wonen. Ze zingt liederen over liefde, hoop of gedwongen afscheid vanwege de dictatuur (ballingschap), en dat doet ze intens, bewogen en met een enorme diepgang; zeker als je achterliggende gedachte in acht neemt. Elina Duni zingt gepassioneerd en met respect voor haar muzikaal erfgoed. Ze wordt daarbij fraai ondersteund door piano, bas en drums die haar zanglijnen moeiteloos volgen met stevige uitstapjes naar (modale) jazz. Deze titel van deze vierde cd ‘Dallëndyshe’ betekent ‘Zwaluw’: een vogel kent geen geografische grenzen. Een bijzonder metafoor voor Elina Duni’s muziek die een Balkanland dat jarenlang geïsoleerd was van de buitenwereld nu weer solide op de muzikale kaart zet.

The Albanian singer Elina Duni grows gradually into an international star who shows us the special music from Albania. On every CD she released, she sings music her native Albania, (and the Balkans) in a jazz-signature with piano, bass and drums accompaniment. ‘Dallëndyshe‘ (Swallow) is her fourth album.

The music of Albania is roughly divided into northern and southern Albanian music. In the north the heroic poems (Rapsodi Kresniké) of the Ghegs and songs that resemble to the Bosnian sevdahlinka: with an oriental character and many changes of major and minor. In the south of Albania the vocal music dominates. Polyphonic  music with a drone; one long-lying tone and his lowering melody at the end of a musical phrase. To sing in harmony Albanians even have a saying: ‘one is only one, two have battles and three sing’.

Elina Duni (1981) was born in Albania, in the capital Tirana. After the transitional period in 1992, Elina moved with her mother to Geneva where she studied classical piano, complemented by singing and composition studies at the Hochschule der Künste at Bern. There she discovered jazz in which she reflects the music of her homeland. She starts the Elina Duni Quartet and recorded four CDs. She has found a crystallized form in which she (mostly) sing songs of the rich Albanian culture. So, on ‘Dallëndyshe’ she sings songs from Albania but also music from Kosovo and one piece of Arbereshe Albanians, who live in the south of Italy since the 15th century. She sings songs about love, hope or forced leave because of the dictatorship (exile). Her voice is intens with an enormous depth; especially when you consider the history. She sings with passion and respect for her musical heritage, beautifully supported by piano, bass and drums that follow her vocals effortlessly with solid outings to (modal) jazz. This title of this fourth album ‘Dallëndyshe’ means ‘Swallow‘: a bird doesn’t know anything about geographical boundaries. A particular metaphor for Elina Duni’s music that a Balkan country that for years was isolated from the outside world, gets more exposure. Very well done!
