De Catalaanse viola da gambaspeler Jordi Savall is sinds eind jaren ’60 zeer actief binnen de oude muziek; de middeleeuwse-, Renaissance- en Barokmuziek en geldt inmiddels als toonaangevend. Hij richt drie ensembles op en heeft tegenwoordig zijn eigen platenlabel AliaVox waarop hij thematische cd’s uitbrengt. Zijn laatste ‘Guerre & Paix’ bestrijkt de periode 1614 – 1714 waarin ‘Oorlog en Vrede’ elkaar afwisselen in een prachtig muzikale collage.

‘Guerre & Paix’ bestrijkt het roerige Europese tijdperk 1614 – 1714. In een kleurrijk boek (in zes talen) worden de belangrijkste oorlogen en verdragen muzikaal uiteen gezet op twee cd’s, te beginnen bij de oorlog in Hongarije waarbij de Ottomanen proberen hun positie op de Balkan te versterken, gevolgd door een Joods Aramese klaagzang refererend aan de massamoord op de joden in Frankfurt in 1614. Bij elk politiek conflict zocht Jordi Savall passende muziek; zoals de Venetiaanse oorlog in 1645, de Engelse Burgeroorlog in 1649, het Verdrag van Turijn met prachtige muziek van M. A. Charpentier uit 1696 of de kroning van Wilhelm III die met een psalm van John Blow wordt geëerd in 1689. Werkelijk schitterend is de muziek Wassili Titow, een van de eerste Russische componisten die meerstemmig religieuze muziek componeerde. Bijzonder is ook het ‘Ya es tiempo de recoger’ van Lope de Vega – voor de belegering van Breda in 1625. De muziek op ‘Guerra & Paix’ wordt gespeeld door drie ensemble o.l.v. Savall; La Capella Reial de Catalunya, Le Concert des Nations en Hesperion-XXI (foto). Fraai gedoseerde uitvoeringen die nergens worden aangedikt en waar steeds het fluweel zachte timbre hoorbaar blijft aangevuld met prachtige vocalisten met de juiste hoeveelheid vibrato. Op ‘Guerra & Paix’ staat werk van bekende en minder bekende componisten waaronder Jean-Baptiste Lully, Samuel Scheidt, Johan Herman Schein, Ignaz Franz Biber en George F. Handel waarmee de 2de cd afsluit in een werk dat hij schreef t.g.v. de Vrede van Utrecht in 1713; het einde van de Spaanse Successieoorlog.

Jordi Savall is ontegenzeglijk een grootmeester in de oude muziek. Steeds betovert hij met zijn fraaie uitgaven, getuige de vele thema-cd’s die hij sinds 1998 uitgeeft: ‘Don Quijote de la Mancha‘, met muziek uit de tijd van Miguel de Cervantas (16de eeuw). De schitterende ‘Armenia Spirit‘ (Armeense muziek), ‘La Route de Oriente’ (1506-1553) of het dubbel album ‘Diáspora Sefardi’ met oud Joods-Spaans Sefardische muziek waarop zijn toenmalig vrouw, de zangeres Montserrat Figueras (1942–2011) nog te horen is. Met ‘Guerre & Paix’ legt hij een wereldlijke link naar het heden waaruit blijkt dat de mensheid nog net zo wreed en meedogenloos is als vier eeuwen geleden. De afgelopen decennia staat de wereld in brand met oorlogen in Syrië, Afghanistan, Bosnië, Palestina, Irak of Afrika. Maar de wereld is ook net zo harmonieus als 400 jaar geleden; waar mensen gelukkig willen zijn en net zó kunnen genieten van bijzondere en fascinerende muziek.

The Catalan viola da gamba player Jordi Savall has been very active since the late 60s in Early Music; medieval, Renaissance and Baroque music. He established three ensembles and started his own record label AliaVox on which he release thematic CDs. His last one ‘Guerre & Paix’ covers the period 1614 – 1714. ‘War and Peace’ alternate in a wonderful musical collage.

‘Guerre & Paix’ covers the tumultuous European era 1614 – 1714. In a colourful book (in six languages) major wars and treaties are musicaly put on two CDs, starting with the war in Hungary where the Ottomans try to strengthen their position on the Balkans, followed by a Jewish Aramaic lament referring to the mass murder of Jews in Frankfurt in 1614. To each political conflict Jordi Savall searched appropriate music; like the Venetian war in 1645, the English Civil War in 1649, the Treaty of Turin with beautiful music of M.A. Charpentier from 1696 or the coronation of William III with a psalm of John Blow in 1689. Really beautiful is the music Vasili Titow, one of the first Russian composers who wrote polyphonic sacred music. Another special feature is the ‘Ya es tiempo de recoger’ by Lope de Vega – the Siege of Breda in 1625. The music on ‘Guerra & Paix’ is played by three ensemble conducted by Savall; La Capella Reial de Catalunya (photo), Le Concert des Nations and Hesperion-XXI. These ensembles have a wonderful presentation and play lovely versions complemented by superb vocalists. There are famous and lesser-known composers on ‘Guerra & Paix’ including Jean-Baptiste Lully, Samuel Scheidt, Johan Herman Schein, Ignaz Franz Biber and George F. Handel who composed a work for the Peace Of Utrecht in 1713; the end of the Spanish Succession.

Jordi Savall is undeniably a master of the ancient music, still enchanting with beautiful releases. Like the many themed CDs he recorded since 1998: ‘Don Quixote de la Mancha’ with music from the time of Miguel de Cervantas (16th century). The magnificent ‘Armenia Spirit‘ (Armenian music), ‘La Route de Oriente’ (1506-1553) or the double album ‘Diaspora Sefardi‘ with old Jewish-Spanish Sephardic music which his then-wife, the singer Montserrat Figueras (1942-2011) can be heard. With ‘Guerre & Paix’ he puts a secular link to the present, showing that humanity is still as cruel and ruthless as four centuries ago. In recent decades the world burns with wars in Syria, Afghanistan, Bosnia, Palestine, Iraq or Africa. But the world is also just as harmonious as 400 years ago; where people want to be happy and want to enjoy special and fascinating music.
