‘A New Day’ is de nieuwste cd van de Senegalese zanger Carlou D. De opvolger van zijn in 2010 verschenen solo-debuut ‘Muzikr‘. In de jaren ’90 had bij succes met zijn hip-hop formatie Positive Black Soul waarmee hij in 2003 al te horen was op het North Sea Jazz Festival. Inmiddels is hij uitgegroeid tot een West Afrikaanse superster.

Carlou D (Ibrahima Loucard – Dakar 1979) is een gepassioneerd gitarist en zanger met een enorm stembereik. Begin 2015 zong hij een glansrijke rol in de Sahel Opera. Een door prins Claus (1926-2002) geïnitieerde opera met musici uit de Sahel landen. Voor ‘A New day’ schreef Carlou D pakkende liedjes waarin hij zijn stem veelzijdig gebruikt. Zingt net zo makkelijk popachtige ballads als energieke stukken, beweeglijk en acrobatisch in het Wolof, Frans en Engels. ‘A New Day‘ werd opgenomen in Stockholm en Dakar en is een overwegend pop georïenteerd album aangevuld met blues en mbalax; de populaire dansmuziek van Senegal. Carlou D heeft een fraai gezelschap Zweedse en Afrikaanse musici om zich heen verzameld waaronder allround pianist en componist Jesper Nordenström, gitarist Ola Gustafsson, blazers Wilfried Zinzou en Gislas Nzolani en percussionist/drummer Thomas Eby. De Zweedse zanger Eagle Eye Cherry (broer van Nene en zoon van trompettist Don Cherry) zingt mee op ‘Soldier’ (zie youtube) en de zangeressen Ester Rada (Ethiopië, Israël) en Berita (Zimbabwe) ondersteunen fraai in ‘Mbeegeel‘. Een Gospel metafoor met een strijkers-arrangement dat de melodielijn prachtig accentueert. En niet, zoals zo vaak gebeurt, strijkers die de muziek onnodig sentimenteel politoeren. Carlou D is onmiskenbaar een virtuoos die met zijn laag warme timbre en hoge falset stem moeiteloos de zon laat schijnen en ‘A New Day‘ nú al tot een van de mooiste cd’s van 2015 maakt!

‘A New Day’ is the latest album of the Senegalese singer Carlou D. His second one after his debut ‘Muzikr’ from 2010. In the 90’s he had already success with his hip-hop formation Positive Black Soul and gave a concert at the North Sea Jazz Festival at the Netherlands in 2003. Now he has become a West African superstar.

Carlou D (Ibrahima Loucard – Dakar 1979) is a passionate guitarist and singer with a enormous vocal range. Early 2015 he sang a glorious role in the Sahel Opera. One by Prince Claus (1926-2002) of the Netherlands initiated opera with musicians from the Sahel countries. For ‘A New Day’ Carlou D wrote catchy songs in which he use his versatile voice. Sings easily pop ballads as well as energetic pieces, agile and acrobatic in Wolof, French and English. ‘A New Day’ was recorded in Stockholm and Dakar and is a predominantly pop-oriented album completed with blues and mbalax; the popular dance music of Senegal. Carlou D has a fine company of Swedish and African musicians gathered around him including versatile pianist and composer Jesper Nordenström, guitarist Ola Gustafsson, brass players Wilfried Zinzou and Gislas Nzolani and percussionist / drummer Thomas Eby. The Swedish singer Eagle Eye Cherry (brother of Nene and son of trumpeter Don Cherry) sings on ‘Soldier’ (see youtube) and the singers Esther Rada (Ethiopia, Israel) and Berita (Zimbabwe) support beautifully in ‘Mbeegeel‘. A Gospel metaphor with a string arrangement that accentuates the beautiful melody. And not, as so often happens, the strings arrangement that unnecessarily makes the music sentimental.
