De Griekse zangeres Savina Yannatou brengt al jaren cd’s uit met fraaie collecties liederen uit de Balkan, Griekenland, Turkije en Armenië. Ze wordt ook al jaren begeleid door het ensemble Primavera en Salonico o.l.v. Kostas Vomvolos. Op haar laatste album Songs of Thessaloniki horen we liederen uit deze multiculturele metropool.

Toen in 1995 de legendarische cd Spring in Salonika in West-Europa uitkwam, stond de wereldmuziek even stil. De toen 36-jarige Griekse zangeres Savina Yannatou zong op originele en frisse wijze Sefardisch repertoire. Een stem, zo helder en intens dat deze oude muziek (van de verdreven Joden uit Spanje, eind 15de eeuw) in alle soberheid, hartstochtelijker klonk dan dat dat daarvoor gebeurde. Iets soortgelijks vinden we nu ook op haar nieuwe cd Songs of Thessaloniki. Een collectie liederen uit Griekenland, Bulgarije, Turkije, Armenië, Kosovo, Macedonië en Ierland. Ook op dit album klinkt Savina Yannatou authentiek en herkenbaar. Zij zíngt gewoon, zo helder en fragiel en zonder mooidoenerij, waardoor ze moeiteloos de kern van de muziek raakt en de ziel van elke stijl. Alle stukken zijn gearrangeerd door Kostas Vomvolos (van haar begeleidingsensemble Primavera en Salonico) die met prachtig sobere en ingetogen arrangementen ook nu weer in zijn eigen voetsporen treedt. Bijzonder fraai zijn ook deze keer de Sefardische liedjes zoals Una muchacha en Selania en La cantiga dl fuego, met als absolute klapper het Armeens liefdeslied Qele, Qele – hoe mooi wil je het hebben?

Savina Yannatou wordt geboren in Athene en studeerde aan het Grieks Conservatorium en de Guildhall School for Music and Drama in Londen. Ze brengt meer dan twintig albums uit en trad regelmatig op voor de Griekse radio onder begeleiding van Manos Hadjidakis. Naast het zingen van wereldrepertoire houdt Yannatou zich ook bezig met geïmproviseerde muziek, zoals te vinden op haar cd Rosa das Rosas met nieuw geschreven stukken. Bijzondere albums zijn o.a.Virgin Maries of the World, Songs of the Mediterranean en Traditional lullabies. Vanaf midden jaren ’90 wordt ze veelal begeleid door het ensemble Primavera en Salonico met wie ze in 2015 het intens mooie Songs of Thessaloniki uitbrengt.

For years now, the Greek singer Savina Yannatou released great collections of songs from the Balkans, Greece, Turkey and Armenia, accompanied by the ensemble Primavera and Salonico conducted by Kostas Vomvolos. On her latest album Songs of Thessaloniki we hear songs from the multicultural metropolis Thessaloniki.

When in 1995 the legendary CD Spring in Salonika was released in Western Europe, the world music held his breath. By then 36-year old Greek singer Savina Yannatou sang Sephardic repertoire on a new and fresh way. A voice, so clear and intense that this ancient music (from the expelled Jews from Spain, late 15th century) sounded more passionate than ever before. Something similar we now find on her new album Songs of Thessaloniki. A fine collection of songs from Greece, Bulgaria, Turkey, Armenia, Kosovo, Macedonia and Ireland. Also on this album Savina Yannatou sounds authentic and recognizable. She just sings – so bright and fragile, without acting; easily touching the heart of the music, the essence of every style. All the pieces are arranged by Kostas Vomvolos (her guidance of the ensemble Primavera and Salonico) with sober and subdued arrangements, like he always does. Particularly attractive are again Sephardic songs like Una muchacha and Selania and La cantiga dl fuego, with the absolute topper the Armenian love song Qele, Qele – how beautiful can music be?

Savina Yannatou was born in Athens and studied at the Greek Conservatory of Music and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. She released more than twenty albums, and regularly performed for the Greek radio accompanied by Manos Hadjidakis. Besides singing world repertoire Yannatou is also engaged in improvised music, as found on her album Rosa das Rosas with newly written pieces. Some special albums are Virgin Maries of the World, Songs of the Mediterranean en Traditional lullabies. From the mid 90s she often is accompanied by the ensemble Primavera and Salonico with whom she released the intense beautiful Songs of Thessaloniki in 2015.
