Gipsyska Orkestra brengt met ‘Kilo Gipsyska‘ een berg muziekplezier. De groep borduurt voort op de muzikale Balkan-hoos die West-Europa overspoelde. Met een hoog herkenbaarheids- en meezing-gehalte dendert dit Belgisch gezelschap over de reggae, ska en aanverwante Oost-Europese stijlen aangevuld met surf-orgels en Oriëntaals kleuren.

Het Gipsyska Orkestra uit Antwerpen wordt opgericht door Gregor en Mukti die wel eens wat anders willen dan beuken in de hardcore punkband Moss. Inmiddels is de groep uitgegroeid tot een sextet en namen ze twee cd’s op; ‘Tuttilegal’ (2007) en ‘I Lumia Mo Kher’ uit 2011. De titel van hun derde cd ‘Kilo Gipsyska‘ refereert aan het Roma woord ‘kilo‘ dat ‘veel‘ betekent. ‘Veel Gipsyska‘ dus en dat klopt! Ska en reggea zijn de hoofdbestanddelen van deze feestband. Maar er is meer. Zoals het heerlijke surforgel dat in de klassieker ‘Misirlou‘ en in het Bosnische ‘Zvonija’ (hommage aan de legendarische Ljiljana Buttler) prachtig de melodie omspeelt. Bijzonder is ook de elektrische saz in ‘Wolves and Lambs’. Gezongen wordt er overwegend in het Engels met een prachtige Franse rap ‘Peaucha‘: dat smaakt naar meer! Bovendien is er plek voor een aantal gastmusici zoals Amel Serra Garcia (Zita Swoon) en onze eigen Job Chajes: saxofonist en leider van de Amsterdam Klezmer Band. ‘Kilo Gipsyska‘ is een album dat goed in gehoor ligt. Maar daar ligt ook het gevaar dat de band te ‘vanzelfsprekend‘ of te ‘voor de hand liggend’ wordt. Daar zijn deze musici echt te goed voor!

The new album ‘Kilo Gipsyska‘ by Gipsy Ska Orkestra gives a huge enjoyment. The group builds on a musical Balkan tornado that swept across Western Europe. With a high recognizability and sing-a-long content this Belgian band rumbles on the reggae, ska and related Eastern European styles complemented by surf organs and oriental styles.

The Gipsy Ska Orkestra from Antwerp (Belgium) is founded by Gregor and Mukti who were looking for something different than playing in the hardcore punk band Moss. Now the group has become a sextet and recorded two CD’s: ‘Tutti Legal’ (2007) and ‘I Lumia Mo Kher’ from 2011. The title of their third album ‘Kilo Gipsyska’ refers to the Roma word ‘kilo‘ which means ‘a lot‘. ‘A lot of Gipsyska‘ so to say and that’s true! Ska and reggae are the main styles of this party band. But there is more. Like the delicious surf organ, improvising in the classic ‘Misirlou‘ and in the Bosnian song ‘Zvonija‘. A homage to the legendary Bosnian singer Ljiljana Buttler (1944/2010). Another special feature is the electric saz in ‘Wolves and Lambs‘. Mostly they sing in English with a lovely French rap ‘Peaucha‘: great version! Moreover, there is place for a number of guest musicians like Amel Serra Garcia (Zita Swoon) and our countryman Job Chajes: saxophonist and leader of the Amsterdam Klezmer Band. ‘Kilo Gipsyska’ is an album that sounds familiar. But that’s also a risk that this band might get to ‘obvious‘. I look forward to their next album.
