Het Westfriese trio Skotwal zingt Amerikaanse ‘country’liedjes. Dat deden ze op hun debuut ‘Skotwal‘ uit 2012 en op hun opvolger ‘Denk‘, die eind 2014 uitkwam. Een strakke cd met covers, ongecompliceerde songs die voortreffelijk worden gespeeld. Mede door de streektaal klinken deze liedjes nieuw, fris en origineel.

Driemansduo Skotwal zingt liedjes in het Westfries dialect. Met zorg heeft het trio stukken van o.a. Dolly Parton, The Everly Brothers en Steve Earle van nieuwe arrangementen voorzien. Zowel muzikaal als tekstueel geeft de groep een heel eigen draai aan deze covers die op deze manier een nieuw leven gaan leiden. Catchy liedjes die oprecht worden gezongen, aangevuld met (rauwe) meerstemmigheid en begeleid op tokkelende en ronkende gitaren, mandoline en (vette) plakdrums. Er spelen zo’n tien gastmusici mee op o.a. dobro, toetsen, viool en contrabas die zorgen voor een brede sound en een gevarieerd album. Skotwal bestaat uit Wigert Dronkert, die alle teksten schreef, zijn broer Theo Dronkert en Theo de Jong die verantwoordelijk is voor de opname. De Westfries is ‘een man van weinig woorden die zijn levensverhaal in drie/vier zinnen kan vertellen’. Een metafoor voor de soberheid van Skotwal’s muziek: rechtlijnig, no-nonsense en recht-uit-het-hart!

Skotwal is group from The Netherlands (Westfriesland) who sings American ‘country’ songs. ‘Denk’ (Think) is their second album which came out late 2014. Uncomplicated songs; excellently played, sung in dialect fresh and original.

Skotwal sings songs in the West Frisian dialect. With care, the trio choose pieces by Dolly Parton, The Everly Brothers and Steve Earle provided by new arrangements. Both musically and lyrically, the group gives a unique twist to these covers that gives the music a wonderful second new life. Catchy songs, sung sincerely, supplemented by (raw) polyphony and accompanied by plucking and roaring guitars, mandoline and (fatty) tight drums. About ten guest musicians play on dobro, keyboards, violin and double bass. This provides a wide sound and a varied album. Skotwal consists of Wigert Dronkert, who wrote all the dialect lyrics, his brother Theo Dronkert and Theo de Jong who is responsible for the recording. The Westfries is ‘a man of few words who can tell his life story in three or four sentences’. A metaphor for the austerity of Skotwal’s music: straightforward, no-nonsense and straight-from-the-heart!
