Het trio Chłopcy Kontra Basia (Boys Against Basia) komt uit de folk krochten van Krakow (Polen) en baant zich langzaam een weg naar boven. In een alternatieve muziekomgeving, die zich beweegt over bas en drums, zingt Basia Derlak langs de grens van folk, jazz en geïmproviseerde muziek die langzaamaan steeds vager wordt.

De Poolse zangeres Basia Derlak ontbeerde haar Poolse achtergrond toen ze op vakantie was in Bulgarije. Daar wordt haar, tijdens een rondreis door het Pirin gebergte, gevraagd ook eens een Pools liedje te zingen. Ze komt erachter dat ze nauwelijks haar Poolse muzikale achtergrond kent. Eenmaal thuis gaat ze op zoek naar de folk uit haar geboorteland en richt het trio Chłopcy Kontra Basia op. De groep wordt ontdekt tijdens een online-band-competitie georganiseerd door Riverboat Records. Het trio zet het lied ‘Jerzy’ online en nomineert zich hiermee tot een cd opname, dat anderhalf jaar later resulteert in het uitbrengen van hun debuut album ‘Oj Tak!‘ (Oh Jaah!). Chłopcy Kontra Basia is een eigenzinnig trio dat de randen opzoekt van folk en jazz, nieuwe (folk)stukken schrijft en deze op onconventionele wijze arrangeert. Liedjes worden schitterend gezongen (met prachtige dictie) en veelal begeleid op bas en drums, met een enkele piano en fluit. Open muziek die zo rijk wordt gespeeld dat je geen akkoordinstrument mist, sterker nog, het zou zelfs de authenticiteit schaden. Ontdaan van elk wollen-sokken-imago transformeert Chłopcy Kontra Basia folk tot een nieuwe innovatieve stijl.

The trio Chłopcy Kontra Basia (Boys Against Basia) from Krakow (Poland) is an alternative and great music experience through the vocals of Basia Derlak with bass and drums accompany in a folk, jazz and improvised background.

The Polish singer Basia Derlak finds out on a Bulgarian vacation that she knew almost nothing about Polish folk music. She was asked, in a trip around the Pirin mountains, to sing a Polish folk song. When she finally went back she decided to research the music of her birth country and to establish the trio Chłopcy Kontra Basia. The group was discovered through an online-band-competition organised by Riverboat Records. They put the song ‘Jerzy’ online and were nominated to record their début album ‘Oj Tak!‘ (Oh Yeah!). Chłopcy Kontra Basia is a fine and diosyncratic trio that explore the limits of jazz, folk and improvised music. They write new (folk) songs and arrange them in an unconventional way. Lovely sung, with wonderful diction and mostly played on bass and drums with a little piano and flute somtimes. The music is so rich and abundant that you don’t miss a chord instrument. Indeed, it would harm the authenticity. Chłopcy Kontra Basia transforms folk music into an new innovative style, splendid work!
