De Keniaanse zanger Slim Ali (Mombasa 1947) bracht met zijn band The Hodi Boys drie albums uit in de jaren ’60 en ’70. De compilatie-cd ’70’s Soul!’ geeft een prachtig overzicht van zijn werk. Een warm swingend album met soul en pop songs van deze Keniaanse legende die in 1977 muziekgeschiedenis schreef met zijn hit ‘You can do it’.

Slim Ali groeit op in Mombasa, speelt in de Kitale Hotel Band en de Tusker Band en richt in 1966 zijn Slim Ali and The Hodi Boys op. De groep speelt aanvankelijk covers van bekende Amerikaanse soul en popsterren zoals Otis Redding en Percy Sledge en later ook eigen werk. Begin jaren ’70 vertrekt hij naar Ethiopië, Djibouti en het Midden-Oosten. Bij zijn terugkomst in 1976 neemt hij het lied ‘You can do it’ op wat hem nationale bekendheid bezorgd. Een nummer dat, vreemd genoeg, niet op deze cd voorkomt. Slim Ali neemt uiteindelijk drie albums op: ‘You can do it‘ (1976), ‘Smile’ (1977) en ‘Home’ en zingt op deze cd ‘70’s Soul!‘ verzamelaar in het Engels en twee nummers in het Swahili (‘Mpenzi’ Schatje en ‘Bahari’ Oceaan). Met dezelfde intentie als zijn Amerikaanse vakgenoten zingt hij met een subtiele keeltriller, flamboyante stembuigingen en een sprankelende hoogte over (naaste)liefde, vrijheid en armoede. De opnames komen uit verschillende periodes en variëren hierdoor in kwaliteit: van lekker vet tot sober met (badkamer)galm. Gelardeerd met vocal harmonies, (retro)orgel, (funky) gitaren, blazers en (plak)drums. Prachtig is ‘Gimme Something Love’ waarbij de soul wordt gemixt met funk en Afro net zoals het Percy Sledge gerelateerde ‘Something Good‘. De ‘70’s Soul!‘ is een gevarieerd document, waar zowel de soul als de Afrikaanse muziekliefhebber van zal genieten.

Slim Ali (Mombasa 1947) and The Hodi Boys released three albums in the ’60 and ’70s. This compilation recording ’70’s Soul!’ gives a wonderful overview of his work. A warm swinging album with soul and pop songs by this legend who wrote music history with his hit ‘You can do it’.

Slim Ali grew up in Mombasa and played in the Kitale Hotel Band and the Tusker Band and established his own band Slim Ali The and Hodi Boys in 1966. At the beginning they played covers from well known American soul stars like Otis Redding and Percy Sledge and later he composed his own songs. At the beginning of the ’70s, Slim Ali went to Ethiopia, Djibouti and the Middle East. In 1976 he returned and recorded ‘You can do it’ which became a huge national hit in Kenya. Unfortunate this song is not on this album. Slim Ali recorded three albums: ‘You can do it‘ (1976), ‘Smile’ (1977) and ‘Home’ and sings on this album ‘70’s Soul!‘ in English and two songs in Swahili (‘Mpenzi’ Darling en ‘Bahari’ Ocean). Just like his fellow American colleagues he sings with the same intention, a lovely vibrato, flamboyant voice and sparkling high notes about love, freedom and poorness. The recordings are made in different periods and that’s why they are varied in quality: from fat sound to sober equalized with (bathroom) echo. Larded with vocal harmonies, (retro) organ, (funky) guitar, brass and (tight) drums. Lovely is ‘Gimme Something Love’. A song mix of soul, funk and Afro. As well as the Percy Sledge related ‘Something Good‘. ‘70’s Soul!‘ a nice varied document: suitable for soul and African music lovers.
