Tommy Emmanuel is dé gitaarsensatie uit Australië. Deze in Nederland relatief onbekende gitarist maakte meer dan twintig cd’s, waar dit jaar de dubbellaar ‘The Guitar Mastery‘ aan wordt toegevoegd. Inderdaad, een akoestisch gitarist die moeiteloos alle hoeken van zijn gitaar laat vibreren, veel stijlen beheerst en zelfs vocaal sterk uit de hoek komt.

Wie van gitaarmuziek houdt, moet even zijn oren spitsen. Tommy Emmanuel (1955) speelt niet alleen virtuoos maar ook beweeglijk, energiek, ingetogen en charmant. Zijn spel is melodisch en doet bij vlagen denken aan de Amerikaanse evenknie Leo Kottke die in ’73 de akoestische gitaarwereld schokte met zijn live album ‘My Feet are Smiling‘ (al speelde Kottke 12-snarige gitaar). Emmanuel sluit aan bij deze gitaarstroming, waarbij de gitaar niet alleen als begeleiding- maar ook als soloinstrument gebruikt wordt. Een manier van spelen die door de folkrevival in de jaren ’60 een enorme vlucht nam. Tommy Emmanuel speelt prachtig glooiend waarbij vooral het gebruik van versieringen opmerkelijk is en zijn muziek zeer verzorgd maakt. Hij is een meester in het doseren van klankkleuren. Mooi is de dualiteit in zijn spel waarbij het soms lijkt alsof je twee gitaren tegelijk hoort. Zijn rustige stukken zijn even beheerst als zijn snelle, waardoor zijn muziek, ondanks de soms vliegende virtuositeit, een verbluffende rust uitstraalt. Zijn muziek is beïnvloedt door folk, jazz, country, blue-grass, rock ’n roll. ‘The Guitar Mastery‘ is een gevarieerd compilatie dubbel-album, samengesteld door zijn fans met zowel studio- als liveopnamen. Veel solowerk en enkele stukken met een extra gitaar, bas en percussie. Eigen composities, aangevuld met covers. Jammer is wel dat er maar één vocaal stuk op staat. Maar dat is dan wel een hele mooie. Atkins’ klassieker ‘I still can’t say goodbey‘….’Ik kan geen vaarwel zeggen’ en dat is maar goed ook. Fantastisch gitarist!

Geboren in Muswellbrook krijgt Tommy als vier jarig kind les van zijn moeder. Als hij drie jaar later de muziek van Chet Atkins hoort, wordt dat zijn grote voorbeeld door wie hij later de ‘Certified Guitar Player‘ wordt genoemd. Hij toert als kind met de familieband ‘The Midget Surfaries‘ door Australië en brengt in 2001 zijn solo-debuut cd uit. Hij krijgt twee Grammy nominaties voor o.a. zijn album ‘The Mystery’ uit 2006.

Those who love guitar music, watch this. Tommy Emmanuel is thé guitar sensation from Australia. This relative unknown guitarist in the Netherlands recorded more than twenty albums. A musician who shows easily all kinds of acoustic guitar playing and is even a fine vocalist.

Tommy Emmanuel (1955) is not only a fine virtuoso but also an energetic, modest and charming guitar player. His music is melodic and reminds me of the American Leo Kottke who wrote musical history in the acoustic guitar world by his live album ‘My Feet are Smiling‘ (although Kottke played the 12-string guitar). Emmanuel is one of those who use the guitar as a solo instrument. A way of playing which was common in the ’60s folk revival. Tommy Emmanuel plays lovely and spicy with a lot of ornaments. That makes his music remarkable and gives it a precise touch. He’s a master in colouring the scenery with his guitar. Sometimes it seems you’re listening to two guitarists! His slow pieces are restrained as the fast ones but all of them have a wonderful tranquility. The music is influenced by folk, jazz, country, blue-grass, rock ’n roll…‘The Guitar Mastery‘ is a varied double album, a compilation by his fans with studio and live recordings. A lot of solo work and a few added with an extra guitar, bass and percussion: own compositions as well as covers. A pity there’s only one vocal piece…but it’s a remarkable one. Atkins’ classic ‘I still can’t say goodbey‘…and that’s for sure. Emmanuel is a great musician!
