De Zweedse (Gothenburg) drummer Emil Brandqvist sluit aan bij de nieuwe jazz stroming waar melodische improvisatie, folk, klassieke- en popmuziek elkaar kruisen en een bijzondere mix vormen. Voor zijn nieuwe, derde cd ‘Breathe Out’ heeft hij de line-up van piano, bas en drums aangevuld met het Sjöströmska String Quartet.

‘Breathe Out‘ is het derde album van de in Gothenburg wonende drummer Emil Brandqvist. Op zijn eigen cd-label bracht hij ‘Emil Brandqvist Orkester’ (2007) uit en drie jaar later ‘Pappas Vardagsrum’ (2011): een trio-album met de Finse pianist Tuomas Turunen en landgenoot Max Thornberg op bas. De melodie staat voorop in muziek van Emil Brandqvist. Hoe vreemd en onvoorspelbaar deze soms ook is, kenmerkend blijven thema’s, liedjes bijna, veelal geïnspireerd door de onvergetelijke schoonheid van de Zweedse natuur. Daarbij maakt hij per album gebruik van wisselende bezettingen. Op ‘Breathe Out’ vult hij zijn trio aan met percussionist Martin Brandqvist en het Sjöströmska String Quartet. Het resultaat is een uitgelezen collectie waar bandleider Brandqvist opmerkelijk dienend speelt en zich beperkt tot begeleiden. Het is vooral het pianospel van Turunen dat excelleert in melodische virtuositeit (Maybe I Am Flying). Fraai zijn de toevoegingen van het strijkkwartet, die niet alleen zorgen voor kleur en afwisseling maar hier en daar een solistisch moment hebben (schitterend intro Flowering). ‘Breathe Out‘ is een bijzonder album waar oppervlakkigheid en cliché op de loer liggen. Maar door bijzondere akkoord wisselingen, virtuositeit en vindingrijke arrangementen ontsnapt de muziek aan luchtigheid. Dat is niet alleen erg knap gedaan maar geeft ook lucht – Breathe Out!

The Swedisch (Gothenburg) drummer Emil Brandqvist adds improvisation, folk, pop and classical music to an exciting mix. For his third album ‘Breathe Out’ he invited the Sjöströmska String Quartet.

‘Breathe Out’ is the new album of the Gothenburg based drummer Emil Brandqvist. On his own record label he released ‘Emil Brandqvist Orkester’ (2007) and three years later ‘Pappas Vardagsrum’ (2011): a trio recording with the Finnish pianist Tuomas Turunen and his compatriot Max Thornberg on bass. Melody is the basic of Brandqvist’s music. How strange and unpredictable sometimes, characteristic are his theme’s, almost songs, inspired by the unforgettable beauty of Swedish nature. On every album he use a different cast. On ‘Breathe Out’ he added percussionist Martin Brandqvist and the Sjöströmska String Quartet to his drums-bass-piano trio. The result is an elected choice of music with band leader Brandqvist is a serving player. Remarkable is the piano playing of Turunen who outshines in melodic virtuosity (Maybe I Am Flying). Exciting are the string quartet addition which gives the music more colour with a few solo movements (great intro in Flowering). ‘Breathe Out‘ is an exciting recording where superficial and clichés are circumvented with special chords progressions, smart arrangements and virtuosity. A great job that gives the music space and air – and makes you Breath Out!
