Wat is er nou leuker dan het arrangeren van het volkslied van alle deelnemende landen van het WK voetbal. Lionel Espitalier, Gérard Thouret en Antoine Lucchetti deden het en zetten er 32 op de cd ‘Les Hymnes de la Coupe du Monde‘. Een samba mix van nationale hymne die doorgaans plechtig zijn maar in deze uitvoering een perfecte aftrap voor WK 2014!

Trompettist Lionel Espitalier (foto) kwam samen met studiotechnicus Gérard Thouret en Antoine Lucchetti op het idee om het volkslied van alle deelnemende WK landen te arrangeren in een Braziliaanse samba. Een amusant idee dat een dansend album oplevert. Helaas is de uitwerking wat eenzijdig en soms wat obligaat, maar toch blijft er genoeg te genieten op deze ‘Hymnes de la Coupe du Monde’. Zoals onze eigen ‘Wilhelmus‘, het Belgische ‘La Brabançonne’, ’t Franse ‘La Marseillaise‘ of het Engelse ‘God save the queen‘. In elk lied horen we min of meer dezelfde stuwende roffelende percussie met trompetten die in een samba ritme de melodie spelen, aangevuld met een tweede stem. Fraai is de trompet die op achtergrond schettert en met hoge noten langs de melodie improviseert of de trombone die mooi door ’t Spaans volkslied glijdt. Prachtig is de Mexicaans versie met zijn chromatiek, het Bosnische met een aflopende baslijn of het bekende ‘The Star-Spangled Banner‘ uit de VS. Hymnes uit Chili, Iran, Ghana, Honduras, Italië of Ivoorkust, ze komen allemaal voorbij in een swingende samba versie. Waarschijnlijk ga je deze hele cd niet achter elkaar luisteren. Maar tijdens een avondje voetbal kijken, kom je zo wel in een feest stemmig die het voetbalgenot alleen nog maar zal versterken.

What’s more fun than arranging the national hymne of the World Cup football country’s. Lionel Espitalier, Gérard Thouret and Antoine Lucchetti arranged 32 hymn for the album ‘Les Hymnes de la Coupe du Monde‘. A wonderful kickoff the WC 2014.

Trumpet player Lionel Espitalier, Gérard Thouret and Antoine Lucchetti came up with the idea recording all the hymn of the participating country’s. A cozy idea for a dancing album. Though the result is a little unilateral and sometimes obligatory there’s enough to enjoy on ‘Hymnes de la Coupe du Monde’. What about the Dutch ‘Wilhelmus‘, the Belgium ‘La Brabançonne’, the French ‘La Marseillaise‘ or the English ‘God save the queen‘. In every song we hear the beat of the samba, with rolling drums and trumpets which play the melody. Wonderful is the trumpet in the background, improvising with high pitched notes. As well as the lovely trombone, gliding through the Spanish hymn. Great is the Mexican one with it’s chromatics, the Bosnian hymn with a lowering bass line or the well known ‘The Star-Spangled Banner‘ from the U.S.A. Hymn from Chile, Iran, Ghana, Honduras, Italy or Ivory Coast they’re all arranged into swinging samba versions. Probably you’re not going play the full album. But watching a football game this music fits very well in the intermission or the after party.
