Batik is de nieuwe groep van pianist Wolfert Brederode, drummer Joost Lijbaart, bassist Mark Haanstra en gitarist Ed Verhoeff. Vier musici die de kunst verstaan van het weglaten; alleen dát spelen wat er werkelijk toe doet. ‘Headland’ is hun debuut album in deze formatie waarmee de groep een kleurrijk spectrum laat horen.

Je moet tegenwoordig behoorlijk inventief zijn, wil je nog muziek produceren die uniek is. De groep Batik lukt het in een muzikale atmosfeer waarbij alle vier de instrumenten elkaars supplement zijn. Ze zijn gelijkwaardig, trekken elkaar aan en stoten elkaar af en kunnen daardoor niet zonder elkaar. Waar de een stopt, begint de ander. In een niet aflatende muzikale energie ontstaat een labyrinth van prachtige thema’s, korte speelse melodieën en markante motiefjes waarbij het moeilijk traceerbaar is wie die nou eigenlijk spelen. Ze zitten verstopt, verborgen onder het zachte vilt, het wollige Batik in verschillende kleuren. ‘Headland’ zit vol muzikale kracht die zo subtiel en met nuance wordt gespeeld dat je er vlinders van in je buik krijgt. Explosieve muziek, niet zo ontvlambaar als het lijkt, die met de juiste dosering ver boven het gemiddelde uitstijgt. De naam Batik is de metafoor voor een ‘nieuwe‘ stof zoals die werd ontwikkeld door kunstenares Claudy Jongstra waarbij ze wol met water perst tot een soort vilt. Een inventief procedé waar dit bijzondere kwartet muzikaal garen bij spint!

Batik is a new group around piano player Wolfert Brederode, drummer Joost Lijbaart, bass player Mark Haanstra and guitarist Ed Verhoeff. Four musicians who are masters in the art of ‘dropping’; only play what is necessary. It makes ‘Headland’ is a colourful record, their début.

Nowadays you have to be inventive in producing unique music. The group Batik put their music in a musical atmosphere in which the four instruments are equal. They are equivalent, they attract each other or repel but can’t do without each other. Where one stops playing, the other begins. In a wonderful labyrinth of exciting theme’s, short melodies or striking notes it’s almost unrecognizable who plays them. Melodies are hidden under the soft felt, the woolly batik in different colours. ‘Headland’ is full of musical power, played so subtle and with nuance. Explosive music, not so flammable as it seems, which reached far beyond the averaged. The name Batik is the metaphor for a new material that was developed by the artist Claudy Jongstra who press wool with water to a kind of felt. An inventive process which is the musical basic for this wonder quartet!
