‘Messëi’ is de tweede cd van het trio Donauwellenreiter. De groep wordt opgericht in 2010. De twee Oostenrijkse musici Thomas Castaneda en Nikola Zaric brengen samen met de Italiaanse zangeres en violiste Maria Craffonara een eigenzinnige mix van pop aangevuld met jazz en wereldmuziek.

Donauwellenreiter speelt individualistische theatrale popmuziek met een flinke dosis improvisatie en wereldklanken. Pianist Thomas Castaneda, die alle stukken schreef, heeft een uitstekend gevoel voor melodie en schrijft pakkende, melancholische thema’s. Het zijn veelal instrumentale liedjes gevolgd door solo’s op accordeon, blazers of piano/keyboard. Alhoewel de muziek van Donauwellenreiter niet heel erg spannend is, word je toch meegenomen op de woelige baren van de Donau en zijn arrangementen spitsvondig en origineel, waarbij af en toe een diffuus licht schijnt op tango, Oostenrijkse Blaaskapel en Balkan muziek (vooral door het accordeonspel van de in Wenen geboren Nikola Zaric met een Bosnische achtergrond). Enkele stukken worden (fonetisch) gezongen door de Noord-Italiaanse zangeres Maria Craffonara die ook viool speelt. ‘Messëi’ is een gevarieerd album waarop elke compositie een geheel eigen sfeer heeft en je het gevoel krijgt dat je steeds naar een andere cd luistert. Maar toch is het album een eenheid die door de vier pijlers Hint I tot en met Hint IV bij elkaar wordt gehouden. Muziek die bij elke luisterbeurt aan diepgang wint en waarbij je de langste rivier van Europa soms wat trager en dan weer onstuimiger voelt stromen.

‘Messëi’ is the second album of the trio Donauwellenreiter. The group was established in 2010. Two Austrian musicians Thomas Castaneda and Nikola Zaric play a mix of pop, jazz and world music together with the North Italian singer and violinist Maria Craffonara.

Donauwellenreiter plays theatrical pop music with a fine dose of improvisation and world sounds. Pianist Thomas Castaneda, who wrote all the compositions, has a wonderful feeling of writing melodic and catchy songs. Mostly instrumental theme’s followed by solo’s on accordion, brass and piano/keyboard. Although the music of Donauwellenreiter isn’t that thrilling, you’ll be carried away on the choppy ups and downs of the Donau river in original arrangements with a soft light on tango, Austrian Blaskapelle and Balkan music (especially by the accordion of the Vienna born Nikola Zaric with a Bosnian background). A few pieces are (phonetic) sung by the North Italian singer Maria Craffonara. ‘Messëi’ shows a lot of varied compositions in various atmosphere which give you the feeling of listening to different records. But still the album is an unity by four pillars: Hint I to Hint IV. Music that after a few times listening gets more impressive and makes the longest river of Europe flow slow and fiercely.
