Het kwartet Tiltan neemt met hun nieuwe cd ‘A Road Less Traveled‘ inderdaad muzikaal de minder platgetreden paden. Gitaar, viola, klarinet en bayan (Russische knoppenaccordeon) zorgen voor een uitgekiende muzikale eenheid, leunend tegen Joodse, klassieke en geïmproviseerde muziek.

Tiltan is de groep van gitarist David Golek, geboren in Parijs tegen een Joodse achtergrond. Klassiek geschoolde pianist die het klavier inruilt voor de gitaar waarmee hij in diverse jazz en wereldmuziek bands speelt. Hij woont in Frankrijk, Spanje, Argentinië, Amerika en tegenwoordig in Nederland en gaf concerten met o.a. Ravi Coltrane, Lonnie Smith en Simin Tander. Op ‘A Road Less Traveled‘ speelt Golek akoestisch en elektrische gitaar en schreef alle composities. Een filmisch album, met verstilde soms zelfs mijmerende muziek, niet bang om onconventionele muzikale routes te nemen. Geslepen thema’s bewegen moeiteloos door ongebruikelijke akkoord progressies met veel gebruik van chromatiek. We horen solo’s op alle vier de instrumenten, waarbij vooral de viola en bayan opvallen door hun muzikale wendbaarheid. Prachtig hoe hier en daar de Joodse signatuur doorklinkt in zowel composities als solo’s. Bijzonder fraai zijn ‘Lech Lecha – Part I en II’. Strijktrio juweeltjes die een heel ander Tiltan laat horen. Zeker ‘Part II’ waar David Golek zingt en hij zich niet alleen profileert als een goede componist en arrangeur maar ook als verdienstelijk zanger.

Tiltan shows with their album ‘A Road Less Traveled‘ a new musical route. Guitar, viola, clarinet and bayan (Russian button accordion) in a musical unity based on Jewish, classical and improvised music.

Tiltan is the quartet of guitarist David Golek. He was born in Paris with a Jewish background. Classical trained pianist swithces to guitar and plays in lots of jazz and worldmusic bands. He lives in France, Spain, Argentina, U.S.A. and nowadays in the Netherlands and gave concerts with Ravi Coltrane, Lonnie Smith en Simin Tander. On ‘A Road Less Traveled‘ he plays acoustic and electric guitars and wrote all the compositions. Cinematic music, silent in a way and sometimes a little day-dreaming. Catchy themes easily fit into unusual chord progressions with the use of fine chromatic. We hear solo’s on the four instruments, with a striking viola and bayan. Beatiful how the Jewish music fits into these compositions and solo’s. Extremely nice are ‘Lech Lecha – Part I en II’. String trio’s which show a totally different Tiltan. ‘Part II’ for sure! In this composition David Golek shows that he’s not only a wonderful composer and arranger but also a admirable singer.
